Re-encoding the movie will reduce file size but quality wont be as good as the original.
Or if you only need to shave off a few Mbytes, you can try cutting out the credits of the movie or re-encode the audio with a lower bitrate.
Life is but a dream...so wake me up already!!!

You are lucky because today you will learn one of the most helpful secret of mpeg4 ( AVI ) creation.
First of all, your source should be from a DVD being to your hard drive as vob(s) files: for DVD has the highest video and audio bitrate, hence it will give you the highest quality and the most reduced size AVI ( mpeg 4 ) you can ever get. A little SmartRipper tip: using the "Movie" rip-method tap to avoid audio synch problem, since other tap will result in audio synch problem in your final AVI product.
Next, follow the good guide and correct procedure to produce good AVI ( mpeg 4 ) file: incorrect steps and procedures as well as incorrect settings will result ,in some instances, in unacceptably playbackable AVI files: the secret and most helpful will be discussed at the end of this article, but I prefer to keep in secret for my own publishing years later. For example, if you don not use the "Home Theater" profile in divx pro, chances are you had already making a lot of divx AVI that is non-playable standard and that even when you play on your computer, you will notice not a perfect picture as well the smooth playback. Another example would be if you use the CDEx 1.50, you will notice right away that this CDEX 1.50 does not work at all; similarly, you will be benifiting by sticking with the VirtualDub 1.5.1 (Build 15654) because this is the only VirtualDub version that works correctly as of this time Nov 15, 2003 in the boundary of DVD to AVI convserion. Another example would be you have to have enough knowledge about video in general and video conversion in particular: this is because just like an automechanics, without basic knowledge, he or she will not be able to efficiently and effectively troubleshoot and repair any vehicle. One example of this would be knowing about "forced film" feature as well as IVTC function, the 23.976 fps as well as the 29.976 fps, the resizing and cropping of both 16:9 and 4:3 ( a little tip, use Flashmpeg 6.0 preview to find out how to resize 16x9 movie, and use VirtualDub resize and null transform function to find out how much to crop, and use Avisynth to encode your movie with "Fast Recompress" mode ), ect.
Thirdly, use the DivX Pro 5.0.5 and encode your movie at three passes: use the DivXLand bitrate Calculator ver 2.0 to calculate your bitrate. Again choose a profile in DivX: preferably the "Home Theater" profile because this is the only profile that you will find right away a DVD player( set top player ) that can play back your AVI file.
And fourthly, reduce your audio bitrate to 160kbps or in the case of music video, increase to 192 kpbs: the saveed bitrate will be allocated to video portion to raise its quality.
And finally, the secret that you are waiting for: this is my secret:
First, encode the end of the movie first: encode the part beginning with the black background with credit that has no picture: encode this part at 400 kpbs to 600 kpbs. You can lower the bit rate to 200 kpbs or 250 kpbs. But keep the audio bitrate the same. And encode it as more than three passes. Trust me, just do what I tell you above and you will see what I mean.
Now you will have an AVI file that is the end-credit portion of your movie, and this AVI file is very small but still acceptable in playback preferences. Now use the DivXLand bitrate Calcuator to calculate your bit rate: your movie length is now the length of the movie minus the length of the end-credit piece you had just encoded early. But remember that do not do wrong calculations: you can not fit an even 696mb AVI file onto a 700mb disk: trust me, in the long run, on the 700mb CD disk, you should store maximun of 694mb or less. Storing more than 694mb onto this 700mb disk is a disaster later one.
As now you can see that my suggestion just boost up your available bitrate for you video to a higher level as compared to the traditional way of encoding AVI.
Final finally, this is the last secret of my, and here it is:
First, arm yourself with ample knowledge about video and video conversion. You have to be able to project yourself as though you are the one who invented these following terms as: forced film, 23.976, 3:2 pulldown when playback, IVTC, Avisynth, Telecide and Decimate, mpeg2source and audiosource and audiodub in Avisynth, CBR for mp3 for audio, resize 720x416 and crop to 720x368, both height and width must be of multiple of 16, and DVD2AVI is your invention. If you are not able to lecture to others about the above terms and concepts, chances are you will make mistakes in your career of video conversion in general, or DVD to AVI ( mpeg 4 ) conversion in particualr.
Then be aware of the hybrid type of movie. Trust me, if you really want to master the video conversion concept, go out there and find the DVD "Treasure Planet" 16x9 format and try to convert that movie onto a SVCD format or an AVI format. I had found a way to successfully convert this movie with absolutely no audio synch problem, at least as compared to its original DVD movie. But I rather keep it a secret for my own.
The second thing you should be vigilant is that in encoding long movie, like "the Lord of the Ring: the two towers", requires your checking of the audio synch issure, no matter how a masterful you are in the video conversion business, there will be a little bit of audio or video stretch in this situation. This is because the movie is too long and the the VirtualDub and lame mp3 codec have their limits. Adjust audio ( delay positive or negative) when you split the big AVI file into 693mb file-size AVI.
And final final finally, I had finished ,a long time ago, a small program to help faciliate in splitting large AVI file into smaller one in the aspect of saving time in doing so. This program for the time being has three functions, but more functions will be added to it. The first function is to calcualte the correct time(h:m:s) or frame number so that you can just jump right to this time point to have your final result desired size right away. This function can be use to split one SVCD onto smaller ones of desireable size in a very quick. Other function of my program are in faciliating calculation of vide, time (h:m:s) or length , all relating video conversion and splitting video. But unfornately, there is no instruction on how to post this small program onto this site.

Use VirtualDub or virtualdubmod toreduce your file size.
