i ripped a 181 min DVD to fit in 1350 mb, at a rate of 906 with audio @ 112
i followed the guide at
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm
it took about 9 hours to do each pass, and when it was done, i ended up with :
The-Green-Mile_1st_Pass.avi 6.21 MB (6,518,784 bytes)
The-Green-Mile_2nd_Pass.avi 46.6 MB (48,893,952 bytes)
im using Windows XP but used all the software according to the guide, and forceaspi was installed :)

Did you delete the VOB files and/or the d2v file before you began encoding?

nope
i checked the .dv2 and its fully black as well
i managed to make the divx with easydivx, and then split it with virtual dub
just perplexing as to why other method caused me grief
