Well I'm sure many of you have heard of this problem before.
First let me say that I'm using xp pro with the most current version of shrink. I use dvd decrypter to rip and either WINavi or convertx2dvd for my converting.
The problem is with a couple dvds the screen will be cut off a fair amount on all four sides causing the movie to be very difficult to watch. In all of the programs I use i have not changed any of the settings because i have burned movies alright for the most part. I understand that my problem has something to do with the aspect ratio, but I'm not sure what I need to do about it. when I play the fucked up movies on my PC they play fine, but when I play them on a standalone player is when i get the problem.
Please help or link me to a sticky or something! I tried searching with out much luck for my specific programs of choice.
Thanks ahead of time.

In ConvertX, Settings, TV Format choose the TV screen type that you have instead of 'Automatic'.
You can also change the 'Video Standard' from 'Automatic' to NTSC (North America) or PAL.

StiPilot---I'm sure attar's advice for those programs is solid, I'm not familiar with convertX but it sounds like a proper fix for aspect issues.
I do want to ask why you need to use

just to backup a DVD?
Everyone is allowed to do things their own way, many paths to the same goal and all, but it sounds like you are putting extra steps in the job that might be affecting your quality and such.

As mentioned the only time you need the converters are when converting from AVI to DVD or when NTSC to PAL or PAL to NTSC is involved. If PAL is played on NTSC equipment, it usually looks like the sides have been cut off.
For simple DVD backups all that is needed is the free DVDfab HD Decrypter (DVD Decrypter is obsolete), transcode with DVD Shrink (for shrinking to DVD5 when necessary), and burn with a Shrink supported burner, or burn manually with a burner of choice. I've done a lot of DVD backups this way and no aspect ratio problems.
I've used ConvertXtoDVD and Nero's Nero Vision 4 to handle PAL to NTSC conversions for DVD releases I couldn't get in region 1.
As for the popular aspect Ratios, there's 4x3 for regular TV and 16x9 for HDTV (broad screen). Most of the new DVDs are broad screen. Since converting programs can change aspect ratios, if a 16x9 was converted to 4x3, the sides would be chopped off and characters appear tall. Vice versa and the 4x3 would have shorter characters due to stretching the video sideways. Sounds like your converter cut off the sides of a 16x9 or your source was a problem.
Just to make sure, were you doing a backup copy for a DVD or were you working with AVI files downloaded from the internet?

So if I get what you guys are saying, chances are the file I'm trying to burn is either a 4:3 and I have a broad screen, or the file is a PAL version and I need NTSC or whatever?

What we're saying is it depends on what you really want to do.
If you want to backup a DVD disc you dont need
Quote: WINavi or convertx2dvd for my converting
and are making things hard for yourself. Let us know if you want help making things easier.
If you are converting downloaded .avi files (DIVX, Xvid) to DVD you may want to pay attention to what attar and Pacman said.

We need you to answer some questions. It's sort of up in the air as to what you're trying to do.
1)What is the source you're trying to copy? Is it a DVD or an AVI file you downloaded from the internet? That piece of info will let us know what software you should be using to start with.
2)If your source is a factory DVD, what region code is it? Also, what country do you live in? That info is for matching NTSC and PAL format to see if the files need conversion.
With answers to those questions we can get a better idea of what's happened. Try answering all the questions and not address just one. By the way, what is the title of the video you're trying to back up?

Now I understand, throwing in the statement of ripping with DVDDEcrypter is what misguided me. I personally use Nero for most jobs like you describe.
Another program that can help (freeware) is
SUPER
Its only a converter, it will not burn it to a disc, but if you need extra controls the program has it.
Hope you get things squared up, let us know if you dont.

You answered one question, want to try for some more. You never said what country you were in or what country the video came from (where were the games played).
Rugby is played in different regions that may record in different formats. What you described looks like PAL being played on NTSC hardware. If that's the case, you need to convert PAL to NTSC as well as AVI to DVD. Both ConvertXtoDVD and Nero Vision 4 do the job from conversion through burned output.
