i have a 1 hour 20 minutes and 40 seconds video and i cut the begining and the end and this is as much i can cut out, are there anything i can do to fit it one one dvd?

it was an 701 mb avi video i encoded it with video studio at 7000 kbps. and turn out to be 5.16gb right now but id figure id ecode it down..

what bitrate should i go down to to get it to fit cause i dont want to do trial and error and waste my time.

my video is on my hard drive.
what else can i do if anything?

UM...I hope you still have the AVI file because if you are going to re-encode You should encode the AVI file again and not the Mpeg file ..And another thing you should do is use a Real Mpeg encoder to encode the AVI file to Mpeg because the encoder in Video Studio isn"t that good and you could get the same or better Quality useing a Much Lower bitrate...Say For instance if you use TMPGEnc or the MainConcept encoder to encode your AVI file you could have used a bitrate of 5000KBS and gotten the same or better Quality than if you used Video Studio and you Mpeg file would be much smaller...Then after encodeing you can just import the Mpeg file in Video Studio or whatever you are going to use to author the DVD....What is the audio format in your Mpeg file??? Because if you Chose Wav audio then that could be why the File is so Big, You should have chosen Mpeg1 Layer 2 audio or Dolby digital AC3 but Video studio doesn"t have AC3...If you Used a Audio bitrate of 384kbs useing Mpeg audio or AC3 and then used a Video bitrate of 7075kbs you could fit 82 minutes on a DVD-R useing My Calculations, But useing a real encoder you could Get Much better Quality at that bitrate or the same quality at a Lower bitrate....well anyways Good Luck

Thats generally a great help Minion and thanks for that,but I have followed your instructions using Mainconcept mpeg 2 5000 bitrate and layer
2 audio which makes an mpeg file 3871 mb but when I bring this into say Movie factory to make into a dvd it is still 5.1Gb
What options do I have then.I still ahve the original divx file

ARE there any free prgrams out the to encode to mpeg2 dvd compliant... i used TMPGEnc but the 30 day trial ran out. i already paid for videostudio which came with my burner so i need a free encoder thats better than videostudio?

Boardrep: The reason why it says it is 5.1 GB because DVD Movie Factory wants to re-encode your Files for some reason and that is what the File size will be after it has been re-encoded...You definately do not want the file to be re-encoded so I would sugest you author the DVD useing a Authoring Program that does not encode so you don"t have to worry about your Program not likeing your File and re-encodeing it...There Might be a setting in DVD Movie Factory that will make it not re-encode the File but if not then you should try something like "DVD Lab" (you can download a 30 day Demo at "http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/") which will author to DVD without re-encodeing the File, and if there is some sort of Problem with the File it will tell you what it is and then you can post it here and tell you what is wrong ,If there is anything wrong.....Cheers

Im gonna try to use DVD Lab the next time because I did manage to get onto DVD eventually at 4.1GB works perfect but seemed to take a long time because I think the authoring program I used (Dazzle deluxe) still re encoded it cos it didint recognise MPeg 2 or the original AVI which was NSTC not PAL as I needed.Then it had to build DVD Image then I had to burn with Nero 6.
Anyway got there in the end thanks but as I say gonna try DVD Lab to see if quicker.
Either that or just watch the bloody films on PC instead of DVD via TV
