Now i know its not possible to copy 99% of dvds on the fly because of the copy protection but say when you have backed up one dvd and removed the copy protection is it possible to copy on the fly with the copy just made and get a pefectly working dvd.

Well you can, but this is not something I suggest as burning a DVD is a thin process in which you need to ensure that no problems will occur. If you copy in-the-fly there may be a some problems and if your disc is not destroyed then you will have some problems with playback.

I suggest you copy a copy with saving the image file into the hard disk first and then write.

It is fine so long as you have alot of memory and a fast PC. I do it all the time with no problems but there might be with your setup.
Will it be a risk you are willing to take?

I have the ability to do on the fly copying @ 4x with no probs, whether it is a movie backup or PS2 game....

I know my setup can handle it with ease and with the type of media I use....
I went through several discs to find out, but it does work....I love finding out the full capabilities of PC and software this way I can find the appropriate ways of doing EXACTLY what I need to do......

However it is (as stated previously) risky and the more reliable method is via the image route.....

This is my setup:

AMD Athlon XP 1900+ (1.60GHz)
512 Mb DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 8500 64mb

DVD-ROM= Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1612

DVD-RW Pionner 106

Using Nero 5 (latest version)

Is this good enough to copy on the fly?

I would say so.

If you do copy on-the-fly, make sure that you don't use your computer while copying and that you shut down all of your non-system background programs running. Do this and you will be fine lol.

BTW, if you do encounter buffer underun issues, try reconfiguring your ide connection setup....this may help....

Some people say you should have reader and writer on the same ide, some say you should have reader and writer on different ide's.....

It is mainly down to your devices that you are using and how your M/b can handle them.....

Mine works best as:
Dvdrom as Primary slave: udma 33
Dvdrw as Secondary master: udma 33

Now others do suggest to update the ASPI layer.
Myself I only run with the ATAPI and have NO issues what so ever.......however it has been know to solve some issues......

(throwing my 2 cents in)
With a fair system copying "on the fly" is no problem for those who are using USB burners - it's just you lose speed and will be stuck in a 2X land.
