I wish I had a psp in which the UMD drive didnt work so i could test it out myself...I am trying to research for someone else who is on the fence about downgrading-

Does anyone else have this issue where their UMD drive does not work, and they are running custom firmware? Do your ISO's work using the Sony NP9660 (no-UMD) option?

Yeah there are allot of users which have a broken UMD Bay that use the Sony NP9660 NO UMD driver to play the games from Memory Stick.

So it would be worth downgrading and then installing custom firmware with the Sony NP9660 NO UMD driver option (I think 3.51 M33 and higher have that driver available).

The only options he actually has is...

1) keep it as is and don't play PSP games at all on the PSP.

2) Send it in to get the UMD Bay fixed.

3) Downgrade then install custom firmware so he can play PSP games from memory Stick.

Thanks Larry-
I kind of figured that would work-I just wasnt sure because I dont have a psp with a broken UMD drive to test it out-I told him it would be so much easier to just downgrade it-As I would be the one ending up having the replace the UMD drive for him if he decided to go that route anyway...

so far every single game tested over at MC works on no-UMD option. there are only 2 that don't work on np9660 BUT they work on M33 no-UMD driver though - so looks like 100% overall :)
