Hello All,

I recently installed a 750GB Seagate FreeAgent pro External hard drive to my PS 3. I wanted is set as a boot drive so I connected an eSata cable (female to male) to the system. I ultimately wanted to do the following:

(1) Format the hard drive (required on the first install)
(2) Custom format the hard drive to allot 10gb to another OS
(3) Recover a backup of the original harddrive using an external USB hard Drive.

(1) When I first booted up the PS3 asked me to format the hard drive, which I did. The system rebooted and the boot drive worked. I checked the system information and its said I had about 620gb available. The was kind of a small number considering it was a 750gb hard drive but I didn't care.

(2) I tried to then custom format the hard drive again so that I could install a different OS (linux). It got to about 50% and froze.

I turned off the PS3 and restarted it again. It took me back to square 1 and I had to reformat the hard drive again due to a hard disk error. After the reformat the PS3 reset, and I did another custom format for another OS request. This time it worked.

(3) I then tried to recover a backup frome an external usb hard drive. This required another reformat and I was scared that it would freeze again. It didn't freeze this time, but when it started the recovery installation, it got to like 2% and froze.

Frustrated I had to restart my computer and guess what back to step 1 hard disk error! This freezing issue happens randomly. It appears to only occur when transferring files or formatting the hard disk. I even tried to copy mp4's from a usb drive and sometimes it work and then somtimes it freezes. If it freezes the computer has to be restarted and we are back at step 1.

Does anybody know the cause of this problem? At first i thought it was my cable connection since I had to somewhat modify the SATA portion (I broke off two plastic ends of the cable so it would fit in the PS3). It just seems wierd that there is an issue only on data transfer, but when the system is restarted the hard drive is read again but it has to be re-formatted.

I do not think it is the hard drive because prior to recieving the SATA cable I hooked it up with a USB connection and that worked flawlessly. I do not think it is the PS3 because if I put the original 60gb hard drive that works flawlessly. On a side note prior to the first format there was about 280gb of media on the hard drive, but I figure that would not matter since it would get deleted on the format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
