do they ALL play regular .avi files as well? I'm considering picking up a Pioneer DV-400V-K that plays divx/xvid/mp4/wmv but no mention of avi. Anybody have this model? Just want to be sure thanks.

DivX players play DivX and (perhaps) XviD files, which have been burned on DVD disks as 'data'.
I haven't seen one that will play AVI files.

Mines an RC195 AND HAS THE FOLLOWING FEATURES:

Multi Recording
- DVD±R/±RW Compatible
DVFX ( Digital Video Improvement)
Dual Progressive Scan
VCR Picture Level Up-Conversion
One Touch Cross Dubbing
- DVD ↔ VHS Cross Dubbing
Multi-Format Playback
- DVD-Video/DVD± R/DVD±RW/SVCD/VCD
- Audio CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 CD/WMA
- JPEG / DivX

as to you just burning an avi and watching it, well i've just downloaded a 37 meg avi of soccer tricks, burnt it to disc as data with out conversion and the $10,000,000 answer is NO.

Yup vlc is great, but I hate watching video on computer. That's why I need a multi-format player.

Your best bet is to get a Philips Upconvert DVD player that plays Divx:

http://www.walmart.com/search/browse-ng....&catNavId=62055

The price is great abd if you dont like it you can always return it within 90 days. Im not sure if you have an hdtv, but when the time comes this upconvert player does a great job in picture quality. You can fit like6 Divx movies on one DVD-RW, watch, erase, and do it again.

Only downside is the hdmi cable, sort of expensive if you buy it in store, you can always go on ebay to get one cheaper.
