Ive tried dvd shrink and rip it for me over and over to try and back up transformers. It works great till you get to the end of the movie and the sum bitch freezes up. These programs have all worked flawlessley in backing up alot of dvds - usually it works fine or not at all and requires a little tweak but its never chopped a part of the movie off before. Any suggestions?

Transformers is a big file, need to use shrink in reauthor mode (movie only) and cut out the beginning few seconds and the useless tail part. Then deselect out the language files (audio) u do not listen to and then shrink and burn. This works.

RipIt4Me can rip Full DVD, Movie Only, or Movie + Menu. No need to go to Reauthor in Shrink unless you left files in the source you want to remove. In Reauthor menu function is lost. Full Disc and Main Movie are options when using the free DVDFab HD Decrypter. Whether ripping with RI4M or using DVDFab HD Decrypter, check your source. The nice thing about using Shrink, the quick analysis is a good indicator whether the source files are good or not. In Shrink, be sure to have the Quality Settings for improved use with higher compression.

Everything provided here is all good stuff.
If you have the option, burn it to a Dual Layer disc and forget about everything else lol. With all the special effects in this movie, you'll want the back up to look nice. Again, if you have the option...

For those high compression jobs I use RB. Encoders beat transcoders in the compression arena every time. DVD5 is still noticably cheaper than DL, so I'll stick to encoding to DVD5. I watch the movies on a 60" TV and the video quality looks good to me.
Mr Pink may have something for those who don't mind paying a bit more. It's definitely a lot faster. ;)

All helpful stuff - I was thinking of trying a DL disc because it seemed to me that there was just too much between the previews and the movie itself to fit it all on one disc. I guess it just chose to end the movie there to make it work. Iam going to pick up some new discs tomarrow and we will see what happens. I will also try RI4M on movie and menu only.

If you're new to recording DL, pay attention to the layer break and how your software handles it. About the best program I've found for doing DL burns is ImgBurn.
As for squeezing a lot onto a DVD5, I've yet to meet a factory DL that didn't come out good with Rebuilder encoding the full disc to DVD5. There's a free version, if you don't mind the time to learn using it. It has its own forum here at AD. The only thing I have set for automatic deletion is DTS audio and languages other than English. Watch out with those old Jet Li movies. Those only have Cantonese and Mandarin.

I finally got off my "duff" and picked up a copy of Transformers. The only issue with the DVD is file size. It's a bit on the heavy side. 51.2% compression. At 4614MB (after compression), the full dvd is oversized in DVD Shrink. I easily trimmed 837MB by removing the French and Spanish audio and subpicture files. By trimming audio and subpictures the source comes to a usable size to transcode. Definitely have the Quality Settings checked on this one.
Here's a scan of the copy protection. That's very light by today's standards.
Summary for drive G: (AnyDVD 6.1.8.4)
HP DVD WRITER
Drive (Hardware) Region: 1
Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 1978336 sectors (3863 MBytes)
Total size: 3956663 sectors (7727 MBytes)
Video DVD (or CD) label: TRANSFORMERS_VANILLA
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: NTSC
Media is locked to region(s): 1!
Found & removed RCE protection!
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!
That's about as light as it gets. DVD Shrink will open this one by itself. That means just about any decryption program, transcoder, and burner will work. As mentioned, compression is more an issue than copy protection.
This one is a good candidate for Rebuilder. ;)

If you use VOBB or any other program that enables you to omit stuff from a DVD, you can save some space by eliminating the 3 hidden trailers on the first disc. I think it's the Iron Man trailer and 2 Transformer trailers. But that won't save you much.
But yeah, gmurphy, if you're not gonna do Dual Layer, use DVD-RB. It really does produce a noticeable difference than the transcoders like Shrink.

Finally went out and got some DL discs. Trimmed 5.1 french and spanish. Used shrink and nero to copy. Put it in the dvd player and hit the menu button. I got no sound and unuseable menu. When ever i hit a button the marker in the corner comes up that means you cant use that function here kind thing. So now iam worse off than before. May try RI4M but these dam discs are pricey....

A google turned up http://www.imgburn.com/ .
Just one question, if you're burning DL, why edit? There's no compression involved.
