I backed up a dvd to hard drive, then opened that file and backed up to DVD successfully. The DVD will not play in any of my players including new Panasonic burner/player. It works in the pc drive. Could it be the disk format format? The fact that I don't have Nero?

what format is the disk? dvd-r or dvd+r, go to videohelp.com to find out what format your player will or will not play, just put your model number in and you will find out.

My players all read +R/RW and -R/RW reliably, one will write the same, and all read a +R backup burned on DVD Shrink by someone else on another machine. I too backed up to +R.

It might be the DVD media you're using. This is what I'm finding out because I had the same exact problem as you. My memorex dvd's wouldn't work in my dvd players (PS2, Rca, and a Phillips). I'm going to try a new media and try it again.
I'm at either it's the media or the burner (firmware or burning speed).

I use the same media in these same machines all the time. I am wondering if I need something like Nero, or if the blank DVD was pre-formatted properly, or it was finalized properly. any ideas?

Strange, I'm having the same problem. This just started happening recently also.

I was using the same media (HP brand DVD-R) as before it was happening. I just ran out so I bought some Memorex +Rs, but they are doing the same thing. So that rules out media for me.

I think it has something to do with DVDFab HD Decrypter or the new Nero. I upgraded them and everything else has remained the same as before (when they worked fine on any player).

- it doesn't rules out media, both 'brands' use numerous different manufacturer's discs so you could have completely different discs from 2 identical looking packages of discs, from either of these 'brands'

extremely unlikely that DVDFab has anything to do with this (unless you're not using it correctly); Now Nero could well be part of the problem here but you can't rule out the media just yet; a Nero logfile would help here..

^^ Everything he said is accurate. But problems like this are usually a result of poor media. HP Media, for example, isn't the hottest thing. What brand of media are you using? For further detail, download and check the media with DVD Identifier (freeware).

Many members here, including myself, only use TYs or Verbatims.

It would be interesting to see what DVD Identifier gives for the company Disc ID on the new HP media. MMC made the 4X and 8X. MMC is Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, the house manufacturer for the top line Verbatims. They're right in there with the Verbatims manufactured by TY. I've not used any of the newer formats. I switched to Sony which is easier to pick up off the shelf. In the past the made in Japan Sony was TY. The Tai manufactured +R reads Sony and it does a good job. I even check IDs on Verbatims, you could possibly buy the same disc with a different brand.
