What's the difference? I have Windows XP and was wondering what the difference between the two is, seeing as my electric bill is getting pretty high and I think it's mostly due to my computer.

I notice that sleep mode actually seems to power down the comp. cuz I can't hear it running at all, while hibernate does not.

Is it possible to leave something downloading while in either hibernate or sleep mode?

Actually, it's the other way around. Sleep mode just puts it in a low power state, while hibernate saves the memory to the HD, and completely turns it off. And no, you can't leave anything downloading, backing up, or anything when it's in either of those two modes. If you want to save on your electric bill, you should Hibernate.
