Hey,
lately i had a problem with my PS2. It made a buzzing and clicking sound when i tryed to load a game or eject the disc tray, and it wouldnt let me play games. So I opened it up cleaned the laser, And adjusted/ aligned the laser. It worked. But each day i have to open the ps2 up again to reallign the laser.
Has anyone got any ideas why it is unnaligning?
and how i can fix it?
Thanks :)

Were you adjusting the white gear thing? You might have one of the PS2's that realigns the white gear thing back to factory each time you turn on the system. Check that out.

What is the model number or version of your PS2? Does it attempt to spin the disc once or does it not do anything?

I don't know anything on fixing slims, you may want to try a new laser or get a used fat PS2 from gamestop for $70.

hmm....i have a fat ps2 also, i got it the day ps2's came out. and somehow it still works, it never loads right away and scratches the hell out of discs, thats why i went and got a slim one. my fat ps2 is chipped also, i just need gameshark for it to work, but since it scratched my gameshark disc to hell in almost no time at all i figured it was worthless.

Never heard of the PS2 scratching discs, are you sure the laser isn't misaligned? What exactly is scratching the disc?

well unfortuantely it was also the first mod chip ever made for the ps2 that i installed in the system. so my fat ps2 does a swap trick thing. you throw the game shark disc in there, let it load up then hold eject, the disc comes out spinning faster than ever (in the tray, scratching the hell out of the disc) and you have like 4 seconds to switch discs.

So I bet it doesnt scratch discs if you dont do the swap thing and let it play games normally.

My PS2 is a fat one, a SCPH 39002
v7 or v8
i adjusted it by turning the white cog slightly and then it works but stops working every day or so and i have to readjust it.

When you tried it without the gameshark was it a PS2 game that was bought from the store with the region of your PS2 (NTSC-PAL)? If it was and it doesnt work then try to use the following discs, all bought not burned with the correct region:
PS2 Silver, PS2 Purple, PS1, DVD Movie, Audio CD, Burned CD.
If it plays back any of these then it could be that the laser just needs adjustment and that you don't need a new laser.

Just make sure it is the spindle and not the laser. One way you could check is to put in a disc straight with the label facing the front, so you can read it and close the drive tray and open it whenever it fails at reading, if the disc position has not changed then the spindle is bad, if it has then the laser is bad. Also check to see if the browser says "Reading Disc" If it says it for about 5-10 seconds then its attempting to read but cant. If it says it once and stops then the spindle is bad. Make sure too that if you have opened the system that the sensors are all intact, if one of them are broken then the PS2 will not know that the drive is closed and will not attempt to read the disc.
