When backing up an episodic DVD, It's always wise to do the full Disc.
They usually have 4 episosdes Per disc.

Disc 1 (1-2): "The Stolen Eagle" and "How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic." Extras include the featurettes "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" and "All Roads Lead to Rome."

yes most are 4 episodic , watch the first few mins. to make sure

I would go two episodic per DVD-5 (SL), all 4 episodic on one blank DVD-5 will make it to compressed which leads to poor picture quality. using 2-DVD-5s compare to using a DVD-9 (DL) is still less expensive.

My advice on backing up episode type DVD9s unless you know what you're doing is to just bite the bullet and do an exact copy using a DL disk. Usually you lose a lot of picture quality trying to shrink the DVD9 to a DVD5 since the DVD9 is completely full, i.e. 7.5+ GBs.

If you have a little experience, then you can put the first 2 episodes of a 4 episode DVD9 on one DVD5 and the last 2 on another DVD5. I usually go this route. First, however, you have to preview (Shrink is good for this). You have look and listen to the titles on the disk to figure out the DVD structure. Frequently the structure is a little bizarre. I've seen DVDs with all the episodes as one title and the also as individual titles for each episode. I've also seen Disks with say 12 titles, obviously 3 copies of each of the 4 episodes (different angles? different audio?). So the key to backing up using multiple disks is to preview the first few minutes of each title to identify which episode it is, and what the audio is.

clonedvd 2 is lots easier to use than dvd shrink doing episode dvds. just check and uncheck the boxes and your off

use better blank media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim burning no faster than 8x max even 4x if you're still having playback problems and it should playback fine

@Dsouth

Try ripping with DFAB decrypter

http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

Then backup with Shrink (I think there is a place in Shrinks Options where you can set the Booktyping)

I also suggest you Burn with Imgburn

http://www.imgburn.com

Both are freeware

dvd shrink doesn't have a burning engine so you can't set it to booktype in dvd shrink however you can in nero

The setting is in the Burn settings when you goto Backup.

Yes you Must have Nero set as the Burn Engine in Shrink's Prefs.

Before I go on, I have'nt had success with Rome with ANY program, ie DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, DVDFab Plat, AnyDVD over various shelf programs like Nero or DVD Copy, or AnyDVD over Decrypting programs stated before, so I need help there. I have not yet tried to simply watch the DVD yet, so I don't know if the main menu has a play all feature.
Discs with a "Play All" feature in the main menu is the reason episodes are duplicated in your favorite program. 2 episodes= play ep1, play ep2, or play all=4 instances. Just check the running time per episode, match the times and select the first one in the order. Hope that answers that, now can someone help me out?

I just had success with DVDFab Decrypter v3.0.9.6, can only do one ep at a time in "main movie" mode in this version though.

Is there any way to still get the older versions like v3.0.9.6 DVDfab Decrypter?
