i have a hitachi ROM V. 0079FL and want to flash it. am i screwed.
is this unflashable?

well, as of right now, you cannot just software flash the Hitachi 0079FL DVD-ROM. You must install a Maximus 79 passkey chip first, and this involves removing epoxy and installing 9 wires. This method is for no novice indeed, as the soldering points are very fine, and there are stories of people who successfully installed the passkey, but a few weeks later, their 360's stopped working. Hopefully in Jan 08 there will be a softmod way to do it, and a new version of firmware toolbox (current version 4.5) If you cannot return the xbox you have, i would suggest waiting it out unless you have a past experience with fine soldering, removing epoxy, using a heat-gun,etc...
