Nope can't rip into those formats.
If you're looking to put it on like iPod or PSP - Nero Recode supports those two.
Then there's CloneMobile which supports a bunch of different portable media players.

Is there anything that can rip a DVD directly to a .avi or .mp4 that is good enough quality for a computer screen and possibly TV playback

Well Recode quality is pretty good in mp4.
If it's copy protected just run like AnyDVD in the background or rip 1st w/ DVDFAb HD (though I think you trying to avoid an extra step).

Check out the software section for video encoders - link.
I think WinAVI or IMToo might.

I don't know if SUPER will rip (w/ AnyDVD running), but it will convert just about any format into just about any format.

Just my opinion, but I doubt you can rip directly from DVD to avi/mpeg4 you need to go to HDD first. Converting to these formats is a slow process no burner can really keep slowing down/stopping while the conversion is going on. DVDFab Platinum will rip you disk, but it goes temporarily to HDD and then converts. I use this, but it is pay. I have IMToo but you got to rip to HDD and it does not do protection.

Edit: I did find this thread which has a program that is free and will convert, you will still have to rip and bust the protection but here it is.
