BluRay Movies becoming playable region free

I have a jap version of the PS3 & I live in the UK, obviously till now this has meant not being able to play BluRay movies from the UK, i read somewhere that people were working on a firmware upgrade so the BluRay movies would work on any PS3, does anyone have any update on this?

I figure if any DVD player in the world can be unlocked for any region, then surely a PS3, which is practially a PC, can be unlocked.
