What's the easiest way to rip a DVD and convert the VOB files to DivX encoded avi files?

I'm extremely sorry to have to ask this, as I'm sure my answer can by found somewhere on the site or by using the search feature. However, I have been unsuccessful in those attempts, so I've resorted to asking here. Please forgive me.

Anyway, I've been trying to rip files with a program called Max DVD to AVI Converter. This program, however, doesn't work quite right. The audio is always out of sync. I tried fixing it with VirtualDub, and even when I was able to re-sync the audio, it would quickly go out again.

So after doing some searching, I found this site. I did some reading, and then dropped the issue for about a week. Now I'm back, and I need some help, because I have no idea what to do. Some of the files I've read at the site are quite old, and I'm not sure how relevant they are to the problem I'm having. Not to mention, they are quite confusing to me, being a newbie to this and all.

So, what exactly is the easiest way to get a good DVD rip, with the best possible file shrinkage (I'm guessing DivX is the best compression out there). Basically, all I want to do is watch the video on my computer. I don't have any plans of making VCDs or anything. I just want a small file that I can watch again later, a small, properly synced file.

So, will anyone please help me? I realize that it can be a pain to answer questions that have already been answered a million times. But I swear I did try to find the answers on me on, by searching this forum and the articles at the site. So please, be kind?

Well I guess the Very easiest way would be to Rip the DVD In Movie Mode useing "SmartRipper" then load the VOB files into a program called "DVD2AVI 1.76 or 1.77" then go to "Audio" and set the "Dolby digital" to Demux" and set the audio to "Track One",Now under "Video" go to "Field Operation" and set it to "Forced film", Now go to "File" to "Save AVI" then choose the codec you want to use say the "DivX codec" and set the desired perameters in the codec settings and save the File...When it is done there will be an AVI video file and an AC3 audio file, Now you will need a small program called "AVI-Mux" and you Load the AVI video into it and the AC3 audio into it and set the Audio preload to 160 and save the File...Now you will have a DiVx AVI file with Dolby digital audio that you can watch on your PC...There are of course other ways to do this that will give you more controll over the Overall Quality and the way the Picture looks But this is one of the easier methods useing freeware tools....Cheers

DVDx + Smartipper is probably the easiest way, grab my guide if you want (it has links to everything too), very thorough if i might add:

Minion, when I tried your method, I got no audio and the filesize was rather large, while the quality wasn't that great. I'm not sure if I did something wrong or not.

I haven't tried your Praetor.
