DVD onto CD with 5.1 surround

I am trying to find a way of putting a DVD onto CD (multiple ones to get good quality) whilst retaining the Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Can anyone advise if this is possible? I want the result to be playable in a standalone DVD player.

I am a complete newbie to this, so please avoid technical descriptions and jargon - I'd really appreciate some clear, simple steps to follow!

Thanks Praetor - you're one step ahead of me here - I came in to the ripping forum having copied my previous message ready to post it here, and you've already done it! :-)

So, can anyone help? I'm assuming that I need to use SVCD for the pictures but how can I do that and keep the surround sound?

Just to emphasise what I said above, though, I am a complete novice as far as video work is converned so please avoid jargon and if possible list a series of stages!
