Hi everyone,
I downloaded a Max Payne 2 Install .bin file and burnt it first with Nero and then with Alcohol 120 but I got twice tha same error ... While the install shield is performing the installation I get " Catastrophic transfer error " and the installation stops there ...

Thank you for your help

MaxPayne 2 is SecuRom - 4.85.07.0022 protected... in short... a pain in the arse to backup. For information on how to Burn SecuROM and in particular, SecuROM 4.83: (using Alcohol120) http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/43802 (using CloneCD) http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/26771

I'm afraid the file you downloaded is corrupt. When you get these errors during the installation, it means that the file is screwed.

Copy Protection such as SafeDisk or SECUROM mostly block you from PLAYING the game, and not from installing it. You can mostly install protected games, but not play them, if it's from a copy of course.

So maybe if I download the file again it will work ? Its true that i checked the bin file with CD mage and it told me that 53 sectors were corrupt and that it could repair only one ... after that i used the option " rebuild sectors " and there where no more errors in the file ...maybe I did something wrong ? Is there another program with wich i can repair my file ? Anyway ill start downloading a new one ...

Thanks for your help

To check if a CD Image has errors, fire up CDMage (http://cdmage.orcon.net.nz/frames.html), drag and drop the CD Image into CDMage. Then goto the Actions menu and select Scan for Corruption. If it is not an ISO then CDMage will proceed to scan for corruption (for some reason CDMage cannot scan ISOs). If it does find corruption it will display a listing of all the corrupt sectors. To have CDMage try to fix the corruption, right-click on each entry and select Fix. Make a backup before you do this! Note that if the image has more than 'minor' errors odds are that even though CDMage may no longer detect errors, the image is 'messed'. You should probably re-download or re-extract it. If you absolutely must check an ISO, first open it and then under the File menu, select Save As and CDMage will save it as a BIN/CUE. Now you can have CDMage check the BIN/CUE for corruption.

If the bin is corrupt, there is not much you can do. However, I would try to find out WHAT file is corrupt (I bet ?100 that it's a .cab file :D)
If it's a .cab file, you can try to download that specific .cab file from Bittorrent, or Direct Connect ++ (or maybe CrapZaa, but I don't think they will find anything)

I would guarentee you it's a cracked copy m8. Explore the 2 backups you've burned and see if you can locate a cracked folder or crack game exe. If so then you should be able to burn both as data. I recommend you burn very slow= 8x or less.

I downloaded a Max Payne 2
^ Not "original game image(s)^.

Well... i already burned the play disc becuse cdmaga didn't find any errors ...abd by the way , yes there is a folder named "crack" in the play disc .... however , i still cant install the game but im already downloading another image file ...

So if I got the right thing --> back up SecuRom is legal (if you have the original copy)
--> Using a crack is illegal ( but its the easyest solution , wich is a bit paradoxal , isn't it ? )

Try burning the cue files (CD1&2) at 8x or lower and re-install to see if you encounter any errors. If successful then go to the directory to where you installed Max Payne 2 and copy& paste the main game exe to a new folder inside that directory. Now take the "no cd patch" and copy and paste to Max Payne 2 (example: C:\Program Files\Max Payne 2
Now try and run the backup without the "play disc" inserted in your dvd\cd\dvd\cdrw and see if the game will run. You "might" need the "play disc" inserted as some require the cd, some don't (crack, patches).

Obviously I have to disagree as BlindWrite 5.02 easy defeats "original" SecuROM 4.8.x cd protection.

Ok ... i know how to install the crack but even after burning the install cd at 8x , I still get the Catastrophic error ... Does it change that much to burn it at a lower speed ?

I didn't know that it was so easy to defeat SecuRom cause Praetor said

In my 5 years of backing up pc\audio cd protection, I get much better results reading\burning at low speeds. I'm not saying this is the answer to your problem, but I would certainly burn all pc\audio cd protection at low speeds. Try using CDMage and scan for corruption (bin&cue files) ? Just about any cd burner can defeat SecuROM 4.8.x using BlindWrite 5. As a precaution, I would burn RAW-DAW+96(sub-q channel data).

With Blindwrite you have a really good chance of backing up SecureROM games. With virtually anything else, you have a significantly more difficult time ahead. -- hence my comments
