I'm new to the PS2, but not new to soldering SMT and modding in general.
I just bought a PS2 slim, model SCPH-79001. When searching for how to identify the version, all the guides I found stop at version 16. This model seems to be new.
The description says "also in stores you will find now the version 79001 - our chip is tested and working".
I'm wondering:
1) Is there a version number for this PS2?
2) What modchip would you recommend? I'm willing to spend money on something better even if it turns out not to work.
As for a modchip, obviously I want to play backups and whatnot. I'd like it to switch off when playing online games. I would think upgradability is nice, but not a requirement (how often do updates come out for PS2 modchips these days?).
As no one have replied to your message in the last 5 days I thought I would add my 2p's worth, as this was the exact question I had when I bought a PS2.
Im in the UK and wanted another PS2 with the intention of playing backups on it, altho that was a couple of months ago and already its going on eBay... I get bored easy.. lol
I got a SCPH-79003 (PAL version in the UK), starting looking around the net for solutions and I also noticed that everything stopped at V16, and being the fact that the 79003 is version 18 there wasnt any chips or backup solutions for it yet. Obviously before I knew this I had already ordered a Swap Magic 3.6 with swap tool. So I thought all was lost....
But then I found a website that had a different version of the swap tool, saw how it was installed and then 2 pieces of sellotape and by using one piece of the swap tool, I now have a PS2 that will play backups (obviously with the swap magic disk), but it works for me. Im no good with a soldering iron and dont really know anyone who mods PS2's in the UK anymore, since the government made it illeagle to mod PS2's.
Well, I did get the chipmod and installed it with success. However, there does appear to be a reset issue....I have to disconnect the power from the back and do a hard reset to get the chipmod to boot. If I simply do a "reset", I get black screen.
