I have been reading heaps & found many tuts for everything here & thanks to all that have shared their experiences.

I have a console thats been softmodded & it seems as though the original dash "might be" corrupt a bit as it doesn't load properly & gives error 21 msg. But it still does play games etc ok.

Can this be fixed ??

I am looking to change out the original hdd & upgrade to a 60-80GB, are there any Brands/ sizes thats more reliable than others ??

I have found all the software required I think ( thanks to Chunkhead )
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/557450#3371151 to do the softmod.

As I have a "chipped" console as well , do I need the memory card & Action Reply & 1 of the 3 named games to start the softmod process , OR can I use details from my modded console ??

I have a Slayers Evox cd already.. can this be used ?? or is it primarily for chipped consoles ??

My current chipped console runs EvoX & XBMC.. and they work fine for me.. Is it possible to use exactly the same software on a softmodded console so they are more compatible ??

Are these a good combo or should I use something else ??

The error 21 can be fixed with a Hotswap!

Use the Error 16 tutorial.

You will still need the games to softmod, however you can use the modded console to transfer the savegame exploits to the memory card!

Fantastic response Chunkhead..

Fastest I have ever seen on any forum.

I will give it a go soon.

I tried to use the "live update" from Halo 2 , but thats how I found the error 21 msg.

Can I use any IDE HDD in my console ???

nest step.. find a memory card ( is there any way to start a new HDD without 1 ?? just using PC / Burner etc ?? )

You need the eeprom before you can do anything! In order to get this, you need to be able to access a dashboard!

Repair the Error 21, use the softmod screen to get your eeprom, then follow my HDD upgrade tutorial!

When that's done, simply follow my Softmodding tutorial.

Did you use the Error 16 tutorial? Did you induce the Error 12?

Hey
Started with Error 21 as previously reported.
Induced error 12 as per Error 16 Repair guide.
followed steps to get to PC with xbox hdd connected ( after I revised my booting process with cd rom attached then removed / connected to xbox hdd )
Scanned for hardware changes in Device Manager to show Xbox HDD.

Then it all falls apart after I open Xplorer360.
NO partitions displayed ONLY error msg "NO FATX PARTITION FOUND"

Hmm...

I had trouble with it at the start too, but I just kept trying till it booted!

So your device manager can see the drive, just not Xplorer360...

Seems odd, most people don't have an issue!

So do I just keep rebooting the PC till it works ??

I have reconnected everything & shut it down for now cause my littlin was running round & didnt wanna get him zapped by open electronics all round the TV.

I will try it all again later on / tomorrow.

What happens if I reboot the Xbox ???

will it just continue to default to the error 12 message ???
will it cause any problems ??

IS there a time frame in which i need to pull the cable from the Xbox hdd ?? or just wait till it showns the "12" msg

No, the error 12 can stay there. As long as it's on the screen the HDD is unlocked!

Just keep trying!

If all else fails, use the XboxHDM Hotswap tutorial!

OK ... I got it to connect Xplorer360 replaced with clean 9560
now reads
K:1.00.5101.01
D:1.00.5960.01

Have managed to get a normal M$ dash back but nothing else that was there before.(was softmodded, it worked but no M$ dash access)

I could actually use the console , but would just "fade out & return" when trying to get MS dash from main screen OR error 21 when MS dash from within Avalaunch

Do i now go back & start the softmod tut to get the eeprom file ??
& also get it back to what it was before ie: xbmc avalaunch etc..

OH also

Does replacing the 5960 files render the previous softmod usless ??

& thus needs to be done from scratch again ??

Thanks

Yeah, you need to reinstall the softmod!

I would assume that all your stuff will still be there when you get back though...

;)

How did you get it to load Xplorer360?

How did you get it to load Xplorer360?

Just started everything up fresh this morning & connected 1st time for some reason.

I have the Splinter Cell Game & just got a 2nd hand AR card , but NO software...

Do I need it to make things easy or is that just for the pc ??

Need to figure out what files from the disk & how to get them onto the mem card next

Click on my signature and follow the links to get the software!

You can then use my Softmod guide to show you what to do!

OK , I'm actually a step closer , BUT still miles away...

I managed to FTP from a separate PC to the modded xbox..
It seems as though "H" was the memory card & I thought I had FTP'd the 2 files over (SID4.NK.Launcher & SID4.NK.Loader.PlinterCell.Pal) but the console is saying that there arent any files on it (not that it can read anyway).
size = 510 blocks, available = 232 blocks
I have extracted the files only from original sid.4.0.nknave.edition.xbox-hq into a folder = 5 x zip files + pdf
What did I do wrong this time ??
Am i sending wrong files to the card ??

Help please ( again )

In my situation...

To just "softmod" the console after getting past the error 21 using the error 16 tut & forcing error 12. then update the dash to 5960.

All I do is follow the "softmod" tut yes ??
then this will instal a dashboard ? ( for accessing the eeprom )

To upgrade/change the HDD , I then need to backup my eeprom & copy to PC to use to build ne hdd details ??

Please confirm IF I have this 100% correct.
I dont want to stuff it up now I got this far as I will make a backup of the eeprom as I do the softmod.

thank you all for your help.

The earlier you can get the eeprom safely to your computer the better!

You seem to have it all correct.

From the softmod screen, you can actually make the eeprom backup, FTP in and save it that way! Then you can do what you want, you'll always be able to repair the HDD! Have a look at my "FTP an Unmodded console" tutorial!

ARRRR

just when i thought i had it all sorted.
was going through the softmod process.. backed up the eeprom & went to do step 2 ie 'CREATE MS BACKUP' & got the following after trying to do the MS backup... FOUND MODDED FILES ... action = rename

I tried to continue anyway & it wouldnt allow me to with the messgage @ the "check point" FAILURE : E:\backup\ms not found.

I have used the file manager in SID4 to look in E:\ & there is no MS dir that I could see ..

where does it hide or can I just instal a dashboard somehow

DO I DEL MS BACKUP ??

What modded files do i del to continue the fresh softmod please

Use my "FTP an Unmodded Xbox" tutorial to go in, install a fresh C:\ and also make sure that you do not have any E:\Backup folders!

You'll be fine after that!

SWEET..

softmod completed.. OR so I thought.

After following as directed from Chunkhead & his tuts its supposed to be all done & dusted..

BUT in the M$ dash i go to "network" settings & the screen goes Black/Blank wich ever way you want to say it..

And also the modded boot is in black/white.. BUT i do remember reading that somewhere in the last 48hrs of post readings..

Can anyone point me directly to the post re "no color" in softmod screens please.. I will start looking again , but dont exactly remember what topic it was even under..

thanks

Nearly there...

It's a flaw in the region settings.

Easily corrected with a program called "Enigma Video" this can be found on AID disc, etc. Change the setting to the oposite region, then back to your correct setting!
