Whats the best way to play ps2 backup on a non-modded slim ps2 scph-77001?

I have a Slim PS2 scph-77001. I read about swap magic and other ways to play backups without a modcip, but is it safe for the laser? Will it damage the laser everytime I play a backed up ps2 game? I read that v12 ps2 lasers burn out pretty fast play backed up games I have a v15 slim ps2. I basically want to know what's the safest way to play my backed up ps2 games on a version 15 slim ps2 without damaging the laser lens. Please don't recommened any hdd drives or anything purtaining to it. Thanks alot to all in advance.

Swapmagic ftw. I have the same version of ps2 you have.
I have never had any problems with my swapmagic v3.6/magic keys II combo. My system has never had a disc read error. Best of all though you do not need to open your ps2. :)
The thing about the laser dying only affects v12/v13 ps2's (the early slim lines), and I think it only results if you do a hard mod. Though this can be easily fixed by soldering in a laser fix PCB.

What did you mean by swapmagic v3.6/magic keys II combo? Please walk me thru. I am new to playing backed up ps2 games on my ps2. Please walk me thru what method you currently use for playing ps2 backups on your ps2 since you have the same version as I do. Thanks alot in advance.

Ok so to get started. Magic keys 2 is the method I use to trick the ps2 into thinking the lid is closed even when the lid is open. It does not require you to take apart your system.
Here is a pic of magic keys 2.

Swapmagic is the boot disc used to load up backup games.

The reason you need somethinglike magic keys in addition to swapmagic is that swapmagic will fail if when prompted to swap discs you let the ps2 know it is open. That is why it is called "swap"magic.
Basic guide for swapmagic with magic keys 2.
1. Install mod for tricking ps2 into thinking lid is closed even when it is open. (Magic Keys 2) or if you want to go cheap, tape and tissue mod
2. Insert swapmagic and load
3. wait for disc to stop spinnning
4. swap out for backup game
5. press x once for swapmagic v3.6 (or x twice for swapmagic v3.8)
6. enjoy
You could just leave the top half of the ps2 off and load swapmagic that way but it allows dust to enter the system so is totally not recommended. Another option is a flip-top lid but that requieres you to take apart the ps2.

Whoa, I'm back. Had a long day at work.

After installing a modchip in a v12/v13 console a problem arises. The problem is that to much electric current is sent to the laser causing it to die prematurely. So what the laser fix does is control the amount of electric current being sent to the laser. PCB=Printed Circuit Board.

That is where I got my set from. They also sell v3.6, magic keys II and other cool stuff. Got my order in 5 days.

Thank you so much HG27. I have just 2 more questions regarding the swapmagic v3.6/magic keys II combo and the modchip.com site.
I am thinking of ordering the swapmagic v3.8/magic keys II combo from the site. Does the site take Paypal? I don't want to write a check or give them my credit card number or anything like that, I hope I can pay with paypal.
What backed up games are compatible with the swap swapmagic v3.8/magic keys II combo? I read somewhere on this site that curtain backed up games cannot play on the slim ps2 even using the swap magic. I read that you may have to "rebuild" some games that you backup? Is there a list of all the compatible games that you can play as soon you backup it up? Thanks alot in advance.

I believe the methods of payment include the following
-credit card
-bank transfer
-check
-money order
-cash
So I don't think they take paypal. I used credit card and had no problem. Though if you feel at all uneasy using this option I would suggest a money order or maybe cash.
As for the backup games that can be played. First you must learn that there are 3 types of media on which ps2 games can be made on. They are CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-ROM DL. The way you can tell which is which is simple.
CD-ROM games have a blue/purple colored bottom. (2nd most common)
DVD5 (single layer) games have a silver colored bottom. (most common)
DVD9 (double layer) games have a silver/gold bottom. (least common)
Swapmagic will be able to play CD-ROM backups and DVD5 backups. The games it won't be able to play are the DVD9 ones. These games must be rebuilt in order to work with swapmagic. God of war is an example of a game that must be rebuilt in order to work with swapmagic. Rebuilding simply means ripping stuff out in order to lower the size of the backup from double layer to single layer. That way swapmagic will be able to load it.
There is no need to worry about DVD9 games. One there is not that many out there ( I think there is about 24), and two there are guides on rebuilding them here at Afterdawn. If you need any help rebuilding just ask me and I'll help you out.
