Do a google search for "X-Clamp mod" and that'll fix your 3 red lights. Also a call to 1-800-4-MYXBOX will also fix it.

I dont know how much some people make on this board but spending two hours to fix a 300$ toy seems like a great deal to me. Mine was locking up after 2min religiously.
I did an xclap removal mod that bolts the gpu and cpu heatsink to the case instead of under the gpu/cpu chip, slapped on some AS5, and it has been error free for over a month now. Not a single freeze. Highly recommended fix even if its not broken

I called 18004MYXBOX and they'll send me a a box to send my 360 off for free with free shipping and free repair! Plus i get a FREE month of xbox live gold and an extended warranty. pretty good for sitting on the phone for 20 minutes.
For anyone else who reads this, CALL 1800-4MY-XBOX (1-800-469-9269)! it was FAST and fairly simple to do. They run you through a diagnostics thing to see whats wrong with your 360 over the phone. If you wanna mod your system (The X-Clamp Mod), make sure your warranty is up! I'd highly recommend this to anyone who has a problem with their 360!

A GPU is a Graphics Processing Unit. It's a processor - it doesn't have memory. I think what those sites are talking about is the console's internal cache, which is used for storing dashboard and game updates from Xbox Live (those are stored internally because obviously otherwise they wouldn't be of any use to those people with Core systems). Sometimes a failed update can cause the 3 red light problem, so to clear the cache hold down the 'Sync' button and power on the console - keep it pressed down while the console (hopefully) boots up.
That has worked for me before, but only in the rarest of cases. 99% of the time the 3 red lights are caused because the X-Clamps don't hold the heatsinks down tightly enough on the CPU and GPU, so replace the X-Clamps with bolts to tighten them up. The towel trick is only a temporary solution - it's a bit of a fluke that it works at all. There are X-Clamp replacement guides available on the internet, or you can pay for someone to do it for you.

Yeah that must be my problem. I haven't been on xbox live for nearly a month and this started this past weekend.

Why open up ur 360 to fix it when MS will do it for free? X clamp mod may not be 100% realible in the future. Plus its a 3 year warrenty for the RROD so if it comes down to it use the x clamp mod 3 years from now when there is no possibilty for any type of warrenty left.

when you call, listen carefully though! they do NOT speak very good english but they're doing the best they can. the lady that helped me was extremely nice and even chatted with me about the weather where she was as compared to here in virginia. haha!
