I have just used the guide to update my psp to 3.71 m33-3 but now when I start a game from the memory stick, it starts the game in the umd drive, and when I enter recovery mode I cant access the configuration option?

I think you should try and reflash or simply replace the recovery.prx in the flash0.

Replacing altogether may prove to be very dangerous. I would try a fresh install.

FIXED:

went into recovery/advanced and selected "format flash1 and reset settings"

everything working fine now :D

That's what happened to a psp of a friend of mines today, I just formatted flash1 and it worked fine. Does your memory stick work BTW?
