but anyways im glad they are doing this! i still wish they will eventually get the ps3 to play mkv files for HD rips or something. Divx nonetheless is a very good start. Now im just curious on when

I'm annoyed with the fact that they didn't just start it off with the ability to play avi, divx, xvid etc. The PS3 is very powerful and deserves to have a good media player.

Indeed, its suppose to be a home entertainment system like sony says so they should have had all the format support.

Better late than never. DivX is awesome and im psyched I will be able to watch them on my ps3 :) Hopefully sooner rather than later though.

hi folks, please execuse me for the dump question but is mpg4 (quicktime) not divx? some clips i downloaded from the internet i can easyly watch on my ps3 but others not.

no divx is .AVI.... the ps3 can read mpg4 perfectly, although i had some weird issues with a few. I still think converting with ps3 9 and using the mpeg2 conversion setting is the best. Its fast and fully compatible. It also doesnt reduce the quality whatsoever. But it does take up almost double the space most of the time.
its great how i dont have to convert my divx videos to watch them on my ps3 anymore once this comes out but all my HD content i will still have to convert.

I don't know a whole lot about Divx, but does this mean that I can play .avi files that I have on my External HDD?

Why does everyone confuse containers with codecs? DivX is not AVI, AVI is a container format and DivX is a codec. Same with MP4, MP4 is the container, H264 is the codec.

DivX is a variant of MPEG4-ASP (more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DivX )
