what are you doing when you rip the dvd's. i.e. what software are you using?

A DVD-9 can have at most 9.4 gb (8.76 gb) on it, so how do you end up with a 26 gb file?

Use DVD Decrypter to make a 1:1 copy of the dvd (i like to use file mode) and at most you will have a 8-9 gb rip. A movie that is one hour long will fill up about 2.5 gb and 2 hr is one dvd-r or 4.38 gb.

What software are you using to make it "small"?

Have you tried DVDSHRINK? Its free and it works great. Do a search using Google to find it.
