Hey everyone. Great site and faq/guides. I'm still a newb to this and was a little mixed up at this stage.
I have a "nforce4" mobo with 4 sata ports on it. I have a new 360 falcon with the vad benq drive. I've read multiple guides one on the web and they're both different so i'm not sure which to follow.
One required you to hook up the 360 drive to an available sata port (example showed pci sata card, not onboard), and run msinfo32(sp?) and browse "componants/hardware/storage/SCSI" to find the SATA port I/O address and find the last 4 digits of of the first hex string to identify what drive your flashing later.
Now my problem is, my SATA shows up under "IDE" instead of "SCSI" (but the guide said that was ok too) I have 2 instances of SATA devices shows regardless of if the benq is attached or not. If I move my own harddisk to a different sata port, it still shows the same port I/O #, and nothing changes.
So my question is, can I use the other guides method with just using dosflash (without having to go into windows and find the device I/O port), and the program will show me the correct "address"? or do I still need the port I/O numbers to procede? Last thing I want is to somehow flash the ixtreme firmware onto some other port on my pc. (or hardrive)
Sorry if i'm off the mark here but the last time I was on the mod scene was about 6 years ago when I modded a PS1. :-P Thanks for any help guys!

If you're going to use DOSFLASH16 then I'd suggest unplugging all other SATA/IDE devices and booting to dos with a USB stick or floppy. That way you know you're only flashing the BENQ and not your DVDROM or HDD.

I understand what your saying, so if everything is disconnected save for the benq, then the actual windows/sysinfo method of getting the hex address (last 4 digits) is unncessary? Or that running dosflash will automatically find it anyway?

I have an nforce4 chipset and I flashed mine with dosflash32 in windows. I also flashed by buddies. It very simple and didn't require you to know those ports. I unplugged my second HD and my CDrom so just my boot drive and xbox drive was plugged into my computer. It was also plugged into the SATA port not the RAID port. I turned the xbox on once in windows, started dosflash32, a prompt came up and I clicked "OK", powered off the xbox for a few seconds and powered it back up and it read the drive right away. Pulled the firmware off and created the iextreme firmware for my drive, and did the process again to read my drive then i Flashed it in dosflash32. Very simple!

Every time I power on the xbox when windows is on, I get an automatic blue screen of death. If I power on the xbox, and then the PC, it boots up fine, but once the xbox goes on/off once windows is running, I get the blue screen. Maybe my only chance is the dos method. But i'm just trying to figure out if these programs find the drive for you automatically, or do I need to hunt around for the port/addresses?

I believe you need to know the ports if you will be doing it in dos

Ok, I've been able to disconnect all my IDE devices, hard drive, etc. Booted up with a USB drive with startup files attached and dosflash into dos. I started up dosflash, hit "y". While it hang, I cycled the 360 on and it found the benq, proper port address which matched one I found in winsysinfo....so far so good.
I clicked the prober number of the benq drive...asked me to read, erase, write...I clicked R...then I get a UNABLE TO WRITE TO C: !!!?? (which is the usb drive letter. Wtf?
So I tried again using a floppy disk. Formated for bootdisk, repeated same steps but it doesn't see it as a boot disk! Arrggh!!
Any suggestions? Something i'm not doing right with the USB drive? It's formated in FAT. Should it be FAT32?

i am having the same problem... i have a Abit A8Nx32 Nforce4 mobo and i cant get the BenQ drive to be recognized... i have typed every I/O address that was available and every thing i got in DosFlash16 was error in the read. I also tried DosFlash32 on xp and its telling me NO ATAPI Device installed??? WTF... what should i do... give up, this would mean microsoft wins and im not willing to let that happen.
your not alone, but i need some guidance also :\

yes i have that one but, i just noticed if i leave my xbox 360 on while i start up the computer.. my computer reads it in the hardware check. also in DosFlash16 it doesnt matter what address i type in it gives me the makers title screen and commands for it, i still cant find my port number in dosflash 32 since its saying NO ATAPI device present

Ohhh.. i just got it to read .. and it runs then i turn off the xbox 360 then i turn it back on and it says "cant open file for binary writing"
my code i used was
C:\>dosflash r 09F0 1 a0 1 4 F:\orig.bin 0 and i tryed
C:\>dosflash r 09F0 1 a0 1 4 F:\orig.bin 1
am i turning off the 360 too fast... or what?

just sucessfully flashed and wrote the firmware. super simple if you figure out your port number from your nforce controller.. i just figured it out but going to iprep and it gave me 2 sata drive I/O ports so i elimnated one of them and presto.
ill be checking back to see what progress you made B

I actually flashed it last week successfully. I didn't have to type in the long "dosflash etc etc" command string. Just "dosflash" and turned on the 360 when it didn't see anything and it did. Copied the bin, verified it back in windows and made the new flash and bingo! It's all good. Went on live, downloaded some stuff. No problem. Now I just have to figure out how everything works on live and chatting and such. :-P
