I need to edit the movie Saving Private Ryan for school. I have to take out all (or the more offensive) curse words in the movie. I have no video editing experience, but this is what I would like to do:
I want to be able to have full control of the audio streams so I can either cut out the words completely or replace them with other ones. I can use a program like Audacity to do the editing, but how would I use that with the VOB files?
Could I extract the audio files from the DVD (which I combined into 1 large VOB file), edit them in Audacity while watching the movie in WMP or any other player, and then put the edited audio files back into the VOB, overwriting the original/no-edited ones?

There are many variations on the programs below, that could be used.

PGCDemux - Demux the DVD (include the video as output)
AC3Tool - Convert the AC3 file to WAV
Audacity - Load the WAV and adjust the audio.Save as a new WAV
WAV2AC3 - Convert the new WAV to a new AC3
IFOEdit - Remux the original video and the new AC3 to DVD

I would watch the movie and note the approximate times then FF in audacity to those points.

Thanks A TON ATTAR!!
That worked perfectly and I'm done with the entire movie, and it only took me 2 afternoons.

I've got one more question though.
I want to be able to insert a clip at the beginning of the movie that will kind of be like a disclosure. I want it say some thing like "Waring, the following contains graphic violence. Viewer discretion is advised. No seriously, this gets intense. Like people get split in half by freaking mortars."
I'm going to use a camcorder to record my voice saying something like that, and have a black screen with the same words printed on it. The only problem is I have no idea how to do this.
I want to create the video part of this on my computer and extract the audio from me saying this in the camcorder and putting that with the video. I know that sounds confusing, so I made a simple diagram.

What program would I use to do this?

Please edit out that reference to W***z the Moderators are very touchy about it.
The simplest method would be to use the likes of Nero Vision.
A short (dark) avi clip could be loaded as the first title, then the movie VOB files (VTS_1_01_1.VOB VTS_01_2.VOB etc) could be loaded and 'merged' as one.

You would elect to have no menu, thus the first (dark title) would play, followed shortly by the start of the movie.

Or if the dark clip was in DVD format, use 'DVD Shrink' in 'reauthor' mode.
Click reauthor, use browse tool (right side of screen) to video folder and open.
Drag title1 from right to left side of screen and clip as required.
Repeat for other folder.
'Backup' and a new folder will be created. (no menu) one long video.

All right, I got it.
I just made the title in Windows Movie Maker and converted the resulting WMV to a VOB. Thanks for all the help Attar.
