Done a bit of searching but can't find a deffinate answer.

I've got an Xbox 360 console that has a Hitachi 79 drive in it. I was wondering, as I don't fancy soldering in a Passkey chip, is it possible just to replace this drive with a different version.

I know that I will need to read the key and put that in the new drive. Can you read the 79 key without it being chipped.
Would be great to have a tutorial on this but can't seem to find one.
