from what ive been hearing, internal hard drives cannot play .avi files (on sms media player anyways) but i think they can play mp3s but im planning on getting an internal hard drive for games but I would also like to play mp3s and avi files which i herd an external hard drive can do for sure. the ps2 uses usb 1.1 which would that result in the movie to lag or be messed up in anyway? i know i can play mp3s fine, i did it from my micro sd card (via usb converter) but i wanted to know if i could get like maybe a 10 or 20gb external hard drive for all my music and videos.

hello.
You can play avi's off the internal harddrive. All you needed to do is create a partition on the harddrive using ulaunch. then what i do is copy a few avi's onto my ipod , then connect my ipod to the ps2 and cut and paste the avi's into the partition om my harddrive. the transfer rate it very poor and can take an hour per film. you would probably be better burning the avi's to a dvd and then copy and paste them from the dvd as the speeds are alot better that way.

Regarding the lag issue i have found that when trying to play the avi's of my ipod in sms player there is a bit of lag and it does cause the movies to become unwatchable as they skip and jump alot

i really havent noticed any lag with using my micro sd card with usb converter. but then again they were just short avi files of game trailers. but anyways a new concern just arrived

i just got a 160gig hard drive (its currently shipping) but i just remebered. my computer only has 2 slots available for hard drives and i already have 2 hard drives....so i was wondering if i could just do kinda like a "temp switch" and unhook the slave hard drive and switch it with the 160 gig, put all the ps2 games and stuff on it and then switch it back to the my other 200gig slave drive i normally use.

would this method be safe? i really dont wanna spend any more money but if i have to i will. also i dont have any windows files or anything on my 2nd hard drive, just normal games and apps

the temp switch works fine. i've done it on my old comp, and it works fine. if you don't want to unhook the secondary hdd on the comp, you can use a usb hdd enclosure.

just remember to switch the ps2 hdd to slave before connecting it to the comp. then switch it back to master when putting it back in the ps2.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

ok well i decided to get rid of the hard drive that came with the computer (it was only a 40gig so i wont miss it) and made my 200gig into the master hard drive. The weird thing was, neither hard drive was set to master OR slave drive. They both were set onto "cable select" not exactly sure if thats what it was called on the 200gig but it was in the same place as the 40gig. I have had no problems with them at all, they seem to work well with "cable select" jumper settings on. Do i HAVE to have the ps2 hard drive to master drive or would it work with "cable select" jumper settings.

I was also wondering if i could just get 1 of those hard drive enclosure things and hook up my 40 gig hard drive to the enclosure to hook it up to the ps2 via usb for music and videos.
