I'm pretty much a newb at all of this and I've got an audio question.

I'm currently running a Toshiba HD-A2 into a Onkyo R540 receiver though the dvds may also be used in a R540/HD-A1 setup. Both setups use optical audio cables.

When I'm trimming out the files to be included on my backup dvds which of the 5.1 audio files do I want to keep?....AC3, DTS, or both?

If the backup dvds have only the 5.1 audio files will they work in a simple stereo setup?

Sorry to boar you with these simple questions but I'm ah learnin'!!!!

Thanks for your time!
Ed

Hello Swampman(lovingly of course with no disrespect)

I usually back up with DD 5.1. It is compatible with stereo and if I lend it out(I would never lend out my origional dvd), most people have some way to listen to DD, whereas DTS decoder owners are usually far and few in between. However, I own a DTS set up and prefer DTS to DD (much more audio info in DTS vs DD and audible also), therefore, I usually make 2 backups, on 1 DD and on the other DTS. Hope this helps

When you save up enough, you may want to spend the extra money on a true home theater audio system with a good pre/pro and separate amps of good quality as Parasound or my fav Brystons

Thanks for the replies. I really didn't know what the AC3 designation was and upon looking I see that it is referring to DD and that it will work in standard stereo if needed. I'll be sure and include the AC3. I need to do a little more research on the DTS (larger) audio files and on my equipment before passing final judgement on DTS. One thing I found is that it will not do standard stereo...it's DTS or nothing depending on whether you equipment can use it.

Thanks again,
Ed
