I currently have a semi-bricked Wii from a bad cyclowiz upgrade (worked perfect before, now I wish I never upgraded :( ). Basically the drive itself stopped working completely, and it's currently out of the Wii.
I had given up on it for a while, but recently I figured I might as well try playing some of my VC games, or mess around with Everybody Votes, or pretty much everything else that isn't a disc-based game.
So I load up some Bomberman '93 to play with my buds, but about 30 seconds in game, the display turns completely black, all sounds stop, and the only way to turn it off is with a hard shutdown.
I tried this on Internet Channel, Everybody Votes, Weather, News, and a couple different VC games. Every single one of em froze at ~30 seconds in. But on the main menu, I could leave for hours and it wouldn't freeze.
I had thought that hopefully just replacing the DVD drive would fix my problem with the Wii drive not powering up, but it has me wondering if this problem will remain.
Does the Wii itself require the DVD drive to be functioning when using anything other then the main menu? Is there anyplace to easily purchase a new Wii DVD drive other then an as-is Wii on eBay?
I'm having this problem too, but mine was a wiikey install that has been playing backups perfectly up until yesterday. now all of a sudden my disc drive is non-responsive and channels crash in 30s. Is this problem fixable?
I have just discovered that once I go in a channel and the wii crashes with black screen, the disc drive once again will have power. I can insert and eject discs in this black screen. however once I reboot the wii, the disc drive is non-responsive again.
