Since that wonderful guide is not out yet, perhaps I can cheat a bit and ask an advanced question :p (for me at least)
I downloaded a large file via IRC. File is broken up into the usual 14,649 file size.
How do I combine all files, and identify the program so I can install it? or image it?
Thank you

Right, are they in zip or rar files??
If zip files then they have rar files in them (rar files look like .rar, .r00, .r01 etc etc). Extract all the rar files to a folder and open the .rar file (if there is not one, open the .r00 file) with WinRAR, now just drag out whatever is inside and it will extract from each archive! :-)

After some sleep, I can see where I was lacking some details...and I skipped a step.
My original file format downloaded had the .tar extension, and was over 400mb. I then used WinRAR to extract this .tar file. WinRAR extracted the file into 30+ files, all with this format *****.01 *****.02 and so on.
Is this typical? Do I need something to join all of these files? if you have a link, that would be great to better understanding.
Thanks

Those files can be opened with WinRAR! They might not be recognised as WinRAR files yet but look in all the files it extracted, is there a rar file? If so, open it with WinRAR and simply drag the files/folders inside out onto anywhere on your computer and it will extract from each one. Ill explain why in a moment. If there isnt a rar file, then open the .r00 file with WinRAR, if this file has one of those dull windows logos on it, just double click it anyway and you will be allowed to select the program to open with, then just do the same as if it was a rar file.
Now for the explanation. When things are released in newsgroups mainly, the filesizes of the actual file(s) might be several hundred MB's, which is far too big to be posted on a Newsgroup. So the solution was the break it up into several different archives so that later on, you could open the first archive, extract the files inj it and it would extract from each part of the file, Do you understand what I mean? It's easier than it sounds!

Yep, that did it for me. That was what was throwing me, the stupid generic window icon with no association. Once I told it to open with WinRAR, it extracted my bin and cue files.
Thank you Dela !
