Here?s the deal. 3 years ago I bought an analog capture device (Plextor AV100U) to transfer vhs tapes. I played around with it for weeks, but I always had this problem: when I captured at low quality, everything went smoothly, but if I captured at the higher quality settings the audio would always have lots of crackles and static. I tried different software to capture, but the problem still was there. I got new drivers, etc.
Eventually I got a hold of tech support from the manufacturer, we talked for 30-45 minutes as I tried different things. The tech support guy couldn?t explain it. He claimed the capture device itself couldn?t create the artifact, it must be my laptop. He said I must have ?a very sensitive system?. Some vague thing like that.
Was this guy just inventing some reason to make me go away? He was actually fairly friendly and willing to help. Why would my ?sensitive system? detect noise on high quality capture, not on low quality capture?
I've tried every few months to try this, but never made progress. Long dark nights make me want to figure this out again, but I don?t like banging my head against a wall. I?ve never had a satisfactory solution to this. I?ve been looking at new capture devices, pvr things etc. If it really is my laptop, a new device won?t make a difference.
I?m enough of a noob that I don?t know if this could be a sound card issue. I?ve got a new driver. This is the only time I?ve had any strange behavior from my audio.
So, should I gamble on a new device, wait until I get a new computer(and hope my videotapes aren't destroyed in a fire)or keep banging my head against the wall.
