Is softmodding new Xbox360's still possible?

First of the bat, i have had absolutely no experience with an XBOX360 or anything xbox for the matter. I'm 90 to 100 percent sure i'm getting a 360 for my birthday as a "suprise" which is great an all, but i no knothing about the Xbox360.

I've tried reading how to softmod, but none of it makes sense to me. The most i can get from it, is that it's very hard, and you have to rewrite the BIOS?

what excatly do i need (materials) to do this? how much does it cost?

what are pros and cons of it between this and getting a hard mod?

It's not softmodding, its dvd flashing. Read the tutorials, you need to know what dvd drive you have. The newer hitachi's need a ch!p to even get into mode b.
