I have an Xvid movie (a Russian cartoon) and am looking for ways to insert subtitles into it. It's for a present for someone. I then plan to burn the movie to a DVD using something like Toast.

I have a "script" with the text in it and the only way I have found to insert this into the film is via iMovie but the imported file takes up 5GB and every time I insert a subtitle it splits the movie and puts the subtitles in the middle. It's very laborious, space-consuming and impractical and I was hoping for some suggestions about this 'issue'.

The main issue is, really, that I'm using a Mac. I've vaguely come across applications for this on Windows but I'd like some suggestions for Macs. I've researched this issue briefly and seen stuff like .srt files and such like but I have no idea how to go about making one.

So, for whatever help I get - thanks.

OK, I seem to have sorted out my own problem.

What I did was - I downloaded an SRT file, opened it in OpenOffice (looked up the syntax) and started writing the subtitles. Then obviously saved them using the same name as the movie file and everything worked fine.

To view them I downloaded Cellulo which played the files with no problem. All is well.

Next problem is solving how to burn the files together but I'll cross that bride when I get to it and it seems to be an easier and more common problem to solve.
