the lack of divx compatibility is the only thing which is stopping me from buying a HD DVD / Blu-Ray player.

Does anyone know of any HD DVD / Blu-Ray players that allow me to stream divx movies to my HDTV? I know you can do it with an XBox but I would prefer a stand-alone DVD player.

What about a PS3? They're about the same price as a stand alone player and you get a game console at the same time. Another strong point is that the PS3 is probably the most fully equipped Blu-ray player on the market today. It can play 1080p DivX files too. The only problem is that there is a 2gb size limit placed on DivX and WMV files. I hope that this is changed with a future firmware upgrade.

Can anyone confirm how well the PS3 plays Divx? It will just pick up whatever resolution and audio the file is? Does it play mov or avi? I wonder how we find the specs and codecs on the PS3 -- the website only has a list of features.

I have a Toshiba DVD player I picked up awhile ago for $50 and it plays almost any Divx or Xvid I download. But I don't think it supports AC3 or Dolby Digital, and only standard def.

If your DVD player is DivX certified then it will play DivX with AC3 (Dolby).

In regards to the PS3's media capabilities, there is a full list available through use of the online manual. The PS3 has DivX certification up to the Full HD profile. That means it is fully capable of playing 1080p video. The only down side is that there is a 2gb limit placed on DivX and WMV as I mentioned above. Here is the information copied straight from the online manual...

The following types of files can be played under (Video).

* Memory Stick Video Format
* - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
* MP4 file format
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
* MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
* AVI
* - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
* - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
* AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
* DivX
* WMV
* - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

Hints

* Depending on the data type, some files may not be playable or some control panel options may not function during playback.
* Some video files distributed over the Internet have playback restrictions. For details, contact the content provider.
* To play WMV format files, you must go to (Settings) > (System Settings) and set [Enable WMA Playback].
* When using a USB adaptor to play video files, you may need to use a USB adaptor (not included) that supports copyright-protection features (to play copyright-protected files).
* When using a USB adaptor to play AVCHD-format video files saved on Memory Stick? media, use a device that supports Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0).
* Files that were encoded using DivX 3.11 cannot be played.
* DivX and WMV format copyright-protected files cannot be played.
* DivX and WMV format files of file size 2 GB or larger cannot be played.
