problem getting hitachi 79fl drive key

i'd like to switch my hitachi 79fl drive with a benq drive but i'm having problems getting the hitachi key. I use the 79key to put the drive in mode b but the key sometimes goes into mode b then other times it does. I cant figure out whats wrong. when i get it into mode b and i try to use maximus toolbox 4.5 the application freezes right after i choose "tool". I saw in a tutorial that i need to use a "native sata" but i'm not really sure what that is. I'm using my connectivity kit as the power supply and i'm using the via vt6421a raid controller as the sata connection. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong. I got the drive to show up in windows device manager and I got a drive letter. Any help would be appreciated. I've been at this for hours. Thanks.
