I want to update to 1.9b so I can play Super Mario Galaxy without any problems. Will I notice any differences besides more compatibility with games after I update?

Are there any cons of updating? I heard that you have to put the WiiKey setup disc in the Wii for the Wii to turn on. Is that true? Are there any other cons of updating my WiiKey?

to play SMG, i believe you need 1.9g update, not "b". i updated by doing the following and it worked fine for me:

1. Was on original firmware and updated to 1.9g
2. Updated via internet to 3.1u
3. Use GCOS method with Config Disc 1.3 to set "region free" to "on"
4. Put in SMG
5. Updated with update on SMG disc

Sorry, it is 1.9g. I made a mistake.

Could you still please answer this question, I heard that you have to put the WiiKey setup disc in the Wii for the Wii to turn on after I update my WiiKey modchip. Is that true? Are there any other cons of updating to 1.9g?

I am just plain lazy. If I have to do this, I don't really think it is worth it just to play SMG.

you don't HAVE to put the Config disc in, but I did to just set the "region free" and "disc speed". i don't believe it required though. i have not experienced any cons to be honest. but i hear ya. i didn't update to the new firmware until i absolutely had to.

I would like to use the WiiKey setup disc. I don't really know anything about GCOS. Can you guide through on how to create a GCOS disc?

My cousins just bought me the game. It is pretty fun. I don't have WiiKey installed into my Wii yet, but to play SMG I needed to update to 3.0 on the official Wii firmware. My Wii is now on the official 3.0U firmware. Will I need to update my WiiKey modchip to the 1.9g firmware for my Wii to work correctly? Would I have to update my modchip for the Setup Disc 1.3 work also?
