I've been experimenting with a 'fun time' office project. We're a small IT group working on a college campus and in our office we have a 'fun server' that houses all our shared goodies (.mp3s, movies, etc.) that we stream to our work machines.
What I've been trying to learn to do over the past week is to rip some of my DVD collection, mainly cartoons and really good re-watchable shorts, into a good quality format. Right now, I'm working with .avi format.
I've been using DVDx, TMPGEnc, and DivX Authoring for my tests. So far I'm not into the DivX Authoring tool because I feel like the .dvix format is too restrictive.
I've had really good luck with TMPGEnc and I really like DVDx too.
So here is my problem that is stumping me. Again, I admit I'm really a complete novice with this conversion stuff.
My example is the Spaced DVD set. If I pop the DVD into my computer and just play the DVD, the image will fill the entire screen at the proper aspect ratio.
So, next I go through TMPGEnc and rip it into an .avi file and when I play it back, it will never fill the entire screen, no matter what player I use. I've tried this with all sorts of different rips and formats, i.e., 16:9 PAL and NTSC, 4:3, etc. Yet, any DVD I play from the source disc will fill the entire screen like a TV.
What I'd like is for my rip to fill the whole screen. Is there something I'm missing and/or simply not understanding about this process?
