I've just installed dvd shrink onto my Vista computer and when it finished installing, a lot of my programs in the start menu for example Microsoft office were gone.
I un-installed dvd shrink but they didn't come back...I ran Windows restore and they didn't come back. I find it hard to believe that this has anything to do with DVD shrink but that's what made it happen.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do about this???
this is odd, these directions were intended for windows xp(sp2)
so you may need to tweak them a bit, dvd shrink must have wipped all the program links when adding its own link, this happens even in xp with certain programs, its a registry slip up,

its ok there not gone, the start menu is only linking you to the programs, they where just short cuts,
lets restore them
1) go start
2) my computer
3) open the hard drive windows is installed in, default name is usually C
4) go Program Folder
5) Vista may prompt you NOT to open the folders, ignore it, we are not going to do anything that can cause system damage
6)you will see once in the programs folder that there are many other folders entitled with the names of the produces of the programs, or the programs names them selves
7) open each folder that you desire, find the file that looks like this "NAME.EXE", (to make sure right click properties, type of file exe), it'll usually have the same icon on it as the short cut,
8) right click on it and create a new short cut, drag and drop it to the desktop
sorry i don't know of anyway to restore all the items in the start menu once they have been deleted, don't worry they were only short cuts and links to troubleshooting pages, nothing really lost here
i all suggest running the "error checking" utility on you hard drive, in witch windows is installed on
Thanks for trying to help me. Your directions that were meant for XP, I couldn't get to work on Vista...I couldn't find the folders and file that you're talking about.
I was hoping that there was some sort of magic "reinstate the start menu" icon somewhere. But alas alack there is not :(
I've nearly managed to get my start menu back into some sort of working order by making some shortcuts for the programs and manually putting them into the start menu.

catgirl55, as i thought, if you haven't lost any harddrive space maybe a few mega bites is fine thats normal but otherwise you programs are still installed perfectly, go to computer when you hit the vista button on the task bar, once there you can check your hard drive space
