Basically what you need is known as a TV tuner card. There are two sites I am aware of that can explain the process and what is needed to achieve quality video.
The one is http://lordsmurf.com
The other is http://dvdrhelp.com/capture
How you save the file is dependant on what you plan to do with the file later. TV signal is not the same as DVD video and has some limitations. See those sites as a reference before buying anything.
I hope this helps

Live TV is analog
DVD is digital
One needs to capture the signal and then process it to digital
It's kinda like taking your old LPs and making them into CDs
It needs the right hardware and software and some time to happen

Hello guys, Just for your info that Leadtek has 1 card that is 10 bit decoder and that is the WinFast TV2000 XP Expert. I bought it yesterday and the performance is really superb but the only inconvenience is the downloading of latest driver and PVC software inorder to work perfectly because I heard that the supplied CD software has quite afew problems. Anyway, I did not use the CD at all so I'm not too sure.

Where did you buy your Leadtek card I have looked all over but have not found a place to buy one. Do you have the Deluxe or the Expert? I think the Expert is the 10 bit card isnt it?

Hello, I bought the Leadtek WinFast TV2000 XP Expert at SGD$109/- or USD$63/- and I hear that is selling at AU$110/- in Australia. Check this link for the review of the product http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/leadtek-2000-expert/ I will suggest that you visit www.leadtek.com.tw and look under your country to search for their distributor and you will be able to know who are the retailers. Yes, it is a 10 bit decoder and the result is superb or should I say that I will not bother to look for another one after buying this. Finally, a real TV screen brought to my PC with no more lousy pixel squares. The PVC software allows encoding Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg4, AVI and you can even customise your own Divx, etc. It has also direct burn to VCD & DVD but make sure your PC is powerful enough or you will have video/audio synchronization problem for this function.

Thanks alot for the info. have you looked at http://lordsmurf.com? he is pretty in depth. I like his site but I need to get my feet wet and see what he is talking about before I go his route. I just want to get a good quality picture from my VCR first and go from there.
