Hitachi 59DJ Drive not reading certain backups

Hey folks, it seems as if a friend's Hitachi 59DJ drive will not read certain backups. They will, however, read on my Hitachi 79FK drive. They are on either Verbatim or NX discs, but it will not read some of either. Please help!
