Receiver- 1 unit built in with preamp, amp and tuner

Amplifier- makes sound louder so to drive speakers, need preamp

Preamp- drives Amp. Preamp by itself cannot drive speakers

Processors-plays with audio signal, may demultiplex, decode, not a preamp

Pre/Pro-- preamp/processor combo, usuall used in home theater

Receivers are usually compromises, to get the best sound u need to go to the basics as a pre/pro and separate amp (of good quality) system

Can't find receivers? I just googled it and found their Model 1070 and Model 2150 receivers!

dunno ur price tag or ur music preferance, but I would go with a Harman Kardon-AVR347 reciever , and a pair Cerwin Vega-VE12 Speakers..that should do the job lol..

The H/K AVR347 is about $470 USD and will do the job u ask of it. However it is a light weight entry level receiver (30.6 lbs) and will heat up with loud continuous playing. For hard playing, this receiver may not last as long as u expect, nor have the bass response (sledgehammer bass) you crave. For "sledgehammer bass", you need $$$ preamp/amp combos.

The pioneer is a 840 watt receiver at about $400, then tell me why a Krell Full Balanced Integrated amp at 800 watts, costs $15000 and weights in at 130 lbs is going to kick a$$ out of the pioneer amp?
I know that u r not made of money, but for all good things, saving and waiting to get the good stuff (not necessarily the big Krells) is well wothh it.Besides the world will not end in 2012, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob told me in a dream that the 2012 tale was a hoax.

Dude, I love spirituality also.

To answer your question a receiver DOES NOT need an amp.

But what u tell me from the beginning is that u want to play your music like I do, at life like levels- LOUD and CLEAR!

Cheap parts ain't gonna do it 4 ya. To do bass right, u need a high current amp (read $$$), otherwise no "sledgehammer bass" as I eluded to earlier.
Bottom line , you ain't gonna be a happy camper
