AV Delay when changing extension from .vob to .mpg/ .avi/ .mpeg

I have ripped some vob files but wish to give them the extension .avi or .mpg or .mpeg

When I manually alter the extension from .vob to either of the above and play the file back using WMP 9, the video quality is not impaired, but the sound plays slowly and is not in sync with the video, how do i rectify this problem so that i still have vob quality video with an .avi .mpg .mpeg extension that gives me correct playback of sound.
I DONT want to convert the vob file to VCD AVI or SVCD etc, I just want to manually alter the file extension and still be able to have correct sound and sync playback in either of those other extensions.
