Last year I bought a new computer Compaq with 512 mb and an 80 gig hd. I have been backing up movies for over a year now with no problems until recently. Last night I was backing up a movie and when it was over, I tried watching it and close to the end it would freeze up and not go any further. So I was thinking I had a bad disc out of the bunch, so I tried another disc and it worked with no problems.Tonight I tried backing up a movie, and where it shows the progress it never moved and it said it would take over 50 minutes to burn off. So I sat here and waited, with 10 minutes left to go the disc ejected and said that there was an error to try another disc.
So I did just that, and the same thing happened. Is it possible my burner has died on me? I am using XP, with a TSSTcorpDVDRW DL Burner.
Is the firmware out of date? Where do I go to update it?
Which burners are good? Wal Mart has Sony and Lite on.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You go to online manufacturer support for firmware updates. They usually include instructions. DVD media can make a difference sometimes. Don't write off the drive before you research the problem. You neglected to mention the titles you were trying to record. Without correct processing some releases cause burn errors. Try recording a DVD that worked in the past and see if it works or you still get the write failure. I've used both Sony and Lite-On. Take your choice.

also the drive may have dropped into PIO mode whereas it needs to be in DMA mode that would cause the slow down . you can fix that in device manager by uninstalling the IDE controllers reboot and let windows reinstall or use this guide.

The titles are I Know Who Killed Me, and Kings Of South Beach. There should be no problem backing these up, correct?

What proggies are you using to rip and burn?

What type of blank media are you using?

At what speed are you burning?

Have you tried what Pacman suggested and back up an old familiar title just to check?

Let us know if there are any other problems that you have. As far as the media goes, you'll find most here strongly recommend against memorex.

Most here, like myself use MIJ Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim which can be found at supermediastore.com

Any futher issues let us know. The more infomation the easier to diagnose the problem.

Rip, burn, and conquer!

Depending on when and where you bought the Memorex, you may be using some of the good stuff. You need to download DVD Identifier from CDFreaks.com and check the ID on your media. I recently purchased a spindle of Memorex DVD +R which turned out to be Ricohjpn. CMC Magnetics is the manufacturer that gave Memorex the bad name. So, who made your Memorex?

The Sony +R is usually made by Sony in Taiwan. If you find some MIJ, it's likely TY media. I use Sony +R all the time with excellent results and it's rated as one of the better DVDs on most websites. I've had good results from both MIJ and MIT. Ricoh is some of the best media available. Ricoh recently became available under its own brand name. Since the delivery trucks run in the country, you can get whatever you want online. Since there's usually a Wal Mart within driving distance you can pick up Verbatim or Sony. Even when using Verbatim, it pays to check the manufacturer ID. Some of the less expensive Verbatim was made by CMC for some markets. You might even get Ricoh if you buy the Memorex DVD +R. I have no idea how many manufacturers Memorex currently has supplying the +R, but the last few people I discussed it with found them to be Ricoh.

I am trying to use Sonic which was pre installed on my pc it doesnt work that is where i am getting the problem with playing on the pc and not the player. With this new burner Nero came with it and I installed it but I cannot figure out how to use it, I know I sound dumb but it is different from what I am used to using. I am using Memorex currently.

You need to speak to us in versions and formats. Memorex covers a lot of territory. What I was particularly interested in was the format you're using. Is it 16X DVD +R, 16X DVD -R, or what? If you want to be more specific, you can download DVD Identifier from CDFreaks.com and give us the manufacturer ID. That gives us some insight into quality. Memorex can be either high or low quality depending on the manufacturer and it comes in different formats. Let us know what you have.

Same goes for Nero. What version are you using? Also, OEMs may not be supported to burn automatically. Check your settings in the Backup window when you open it and see what your settings are under Target Device for Select backup target: .

At the top of the Shrink window is Help. When you open that you'll find plenty of helpful info on how Shrink works. Most of the guide links are still good. The guides from Doom9 and DVD +/-R Digest are pretty complete. Pay attention to changes in 3.2 that are different from previous versions (Quality Settings in particular). DVDShrink.info has interactive guides that are helpful for the beginner. Shrink needs a program to decrypt files for it before opening in Shrink. DVDFab HD Decrypter is a good free program. Rip your DVD with DVDFab HD Decrypter and open the files from the hard drive with Shrink. Shrink doesn't burn on it's own and you have to save the output to your hard drive to burn with a program not supported, like your Sonic. If the version Nero you have is supported, the setting needs to be to Nero in Target Device. Shrink is pretty dependable with the exception of a few late DVD releases and some software versions. The main thing is to have the Settings right for what you want it to do. The guides usually explain that well.

As a word of caution, Sonic doesn't always work well with DVD video recording, especially backup programs like Nero. If it includes batch writing software, that can pose a problem. If Nero has InCD, that needs to be eliminated. It's usually safest to eliminate batch writing software of any kind.

The Memorex I am using is DVD+R 16x and I just noticed this LITEON burner is a 20x. Does that matter? Also another question, my stand alone dvd player is over 6 years old do you think that would matter or not? So with having Sonic as well as Nero they are not working well with each other? This version of Nero is Nero 7. Do I need to delete Sonic? At the top of the Nero window there are three options.
cd/dvd, cd, and dvd witch one of these do I need to use? And then do I go to data or backup?

Don't worry, if it burns at 20X and you're using 16X media, you're okay. You want to burn at 4X to 8X. If you're using Nero 7 with Shrink, don't worry about the settings. Shrink does the settings in the Backup window. You don't use data when recording video (that applies to when you're using software to burn manually. No idea if Sonic is causing a problem or not. You have to have Shrink set up right. Follow the directions on using DVDFab HD Decrypter, Shrink, and Nero selected as the supported burner. Give that a try and see if you have problems. As I mentioned before, for a quick run through how Shrink works, use one of the guides at DVDShrink.info.

As for the old standalone, it can definitely cause a problem. I have an older player that is supposed to play recordable media, but it doesn't do a very good job. I've got a newer player that plays just about everything. Try your recorded DVDs on a player known to play recorded DVDs well.

i would dump the Sonic program and use something better like dvd shrink ,dvdfab decrypter, clonedvd 2 + anydvd ect.

if the DVD player is 6 years old as said that definitely could be a problem, try the DVDs you made in a newer player and i would bet they will work.

burn with good medioa like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim no faster than 8x max and should play on almost everthing

hi :)

yep! MCC it is.
the verb/ty's gives me a really high spike at the start of the burn...and about half way through the burn, (doesn't matter whether its 4gig or 3gig or anywhere in between.) the burn speed drops to about half of the speed iv'e nominated and then increases back up to my original setting til the end.
it's as if it has got to the point where you would expect the layerbreak to be if you were burning a D/L...perhaps it's something in the info on the disc that makes it do this (dunno)
haven't seen anything detrimental in the replay.
iv'e got 5 burners in 2 rigs and they do it on all...any other media i use it doesn't happen, burns as usual
perhaps it's me, but i don't like it and i don't want to have to check the burn is good after every one i do. :)

I want to thank everyone for the help you gave me. I think the problem has been diagnosed, it is my stand alone player. I took one of the backups I made copy of a copy over to my inlaws and it played fine in both of their dvd players. In my old player it said no disc, so I need to invest in a new one it seems. Once again thank you all!

Gurnard
If all the Verb/TYs are turning out good, I think I'd give up checking every one of them. If the playback does good and the graphs don't look pretty, which matters most? I gave up doing quality scans on just about all my backups. The only time I do it is when things start acting up. To each his own pastime. ;)

Hotrod
Glad you got it figured out. Luckily you can pick up a good standalone cheap nowadays.

I noticed you mentioned That Nero 7 was Ok,just curious but when I updated my Nero 6 beyond v6.0.18 it kept crashing Shrink.I had read on other sites that this was common so I guess its been "fixed" in Nero 7.Am I correct in thinking this?
