It seems that when ripping a dvd movie that is over 110 minutes, the file size gets bigger than 4.7GB (just the movie, without any extras). Since many movies are now over 2 hours, is there any way to reduce the quality a bit to be able to fit it on a 4.7GB DVD-R?

I'm working on it! There seems to be away if you have the ability to re-encode the mpeg2 file. I'll post more as I figure it out.

Yeah, re-encoding is piece of cake. Basically you take a look at our VCD ripping guide at our articles section to see the basics:
-rip with SmartRipper
-frameserve with DVD2AVI
-use TMPGEnc's DVD template to re-encode the file
-burn
-buy bunch of popcorns
-enjoy

I'm using a mac (I have a pc as well) and I have a card in my mac that will encode an mpg2 in realtime from a Quicktime file. I am able to extract an m2v file from the dvd and just need to figure out how to get the m2v file into an mov file.

dRD,
When I use the DVD template on a particular movie, the the file that I get is 4.9 gigabytes. How do I ensure that the file will be 4.7 or less? Thanks.

Use TMPGEnc for re-encoding if you need to shrink the size. After you've loaded the DVD template, click Settings and from Video tab, you should see Rate Control Mode. Change that to 2pass Variable bitrate (which produces the best quality and takes the longest time to encode) and click the Setting button next to it and set the bitrates from there. Average bitrate is the most important one -- this doesn't hold 100%, so you should set it slightly lower than what you estimate your video should take space. Easy to calculate:
110min movie x 5000 kbit/sec average bitrate
110min x 60sec x 5000 / 8 / 1024 / 1024 = 3.93GB

Okay guys, I have some questions and maybe some answers for you. I'm new to this dvd burning and I just ordered my dvd rewriteable drive. I'm trying to find out all the steps I have to do to copy movies. I have DVD Decrypter to rip the movie on to my hard drive. Now my question is, since I don't have an NTFS partition, can I just merge the VOB files to under 4 gig and make to parts of the movie? So one half will be on one dvd and the other half on the other dvd? Once I rip the movie onto my hard drive, can I just burn those files onto dvd and it will work? I've read other sites that said you have to use several programs to make the files play back. Can somebody please tell me the process I have to go through to copy a total dvd movie?
Now here is my answer to those who don't know what to do with movies that pass 4.7 gig. Go to www.cd-recordable.com, they are the first company to make double sided dvd discs. Each side is 4.7 gig and they only charge $5 each. Single sided dvd-r media is only $3 each!!! Thanks in advance guys, I hope somebody has time to go into detail for me how to do this.

As far as I've understood (yeah, I _don't_ have DVD writer yet) the process is this:
-you rip the VOBs (appx. 1GB each) of the movie to your HDD using some ripper like SmartRipper
-now it depends on your authoring software what you do next -- some authoring tools allow you just drop the ripped VOBs into new DVD layout and make image out of that
-you burn the image with Nero

What dvd authoring tools are good to use? Also, why do I have to use Nero? Doesn't the dvd rewriteable come with software to burn with? I ordered my drive but it hasn't come yet.

I have a Matshita DVD-Ram/RW Drive. I had to download the latest Nero to support DVD copying. I tried to do the "DVD-Copy" in the Wizard. When the image was created, I then tried to burn that image to the Imation 4.7GB DVD-R that was provided to me. The burn failed. the size of the movie totalled to 8GB. My question: How do I go about burning a DVD movie? What do I need to do first? Any help is greatly appreciated.

cru: Problem is that DVD-Video discs can use dual layer technology and DVD-/+R(W/AM) discs can only use single layer and therefor one regular DVD-Video disc can contain data up to ~9GB and DVD-R only upto 4.36GB.
As commented elsewhere in this forum, you can't copy these movies (which take more than 4.36GB) 1:1. You need to get rid of DVD extras, etc in order to get it under 4.36GB. If removing extras doesn't do it for you, you can try to remove unnecessary audio tracks from the movie (Spanish, etc) using Vobrator or similiar tools. Then you need to create new IFOs (menu/disc structure files) for the new disc -- use IFOEdit or some DVD authoring software that allows VOBs to be imported without demuxing them and after you've done that, burn the thing using Nero UDF/ISO mode.

Read this:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487
...next time you ask something trivial by adding non-related question to end of other thread, you get banned. Easy and simple -- might sound rude, but otherwise this forum will be chaotic. So, I'm not going to answer to your question now, but close this thread instead.

I'm sorry if you feel betrayed, but heck, your question has been answered appx. 700 times in these forums, so using the "Search messages" first before posting would have answered to you already.
You don't state in your question, whether you have DVD writer, CD writer, what format you want to use, etc. And obviously you haven't read our guides:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/
...if people ask questions that don't have answers yet, other people on these boards have more motivation to answer to you. But if you ask stuff that has been covered zillion times, they treat you just like a moron who can't search previous messages or browse through the site. God damnit, this site is _about_ DVD backups, so just _TRY_ to be little bit more active by yourself. Once you've read guides, other people's comments, etc AND THEN have some additional questions, me and other guys who tend to help out people on these boards, are more than willing to help you.
You just can't go to some frigging discussion board that is _meant for lawyers_ and start asking questions like "hm, what is this 'law' thingy you guys talk about" and expect people to treat you like a guy with average IQ.

Visit our article section, there's a guide for backing up DVD-5 discs to DVD-R:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/
...and in our DVD-R forums (we have two, one for newbies and one for advanced stuff) there are pretty damn good guides that explain what to do with those DVDs that don't fit into one DVD-R.

For Apple, you're out of luck. At least I don't have even a slightest idea can DVDs copied to DVD-R with Mac.

Very productive comment. Thanks for that and now, please stay hell out of our boards if you can't behave. Find something productive, like Legos and try to improve your IQ.
