Confused on setting up surround sound with ps3/hdtv/dish

Hi everyone. Okay So im trying to setup my home theatre with my ps3,hdtv, and my dish network hd satellite reciever. My goal is to get true sourround sound on my whole setup.
Heres my setup:
-Sony Bravia 40s3000 hdtv- has 2 HDMI inputs, and 1 optical digital output
-Sony Bravia DAV-HDX500- has 1 Optical Digital Input, and 1 Coaxial Digital Input, and 1 HDMI output (but for DVD only)
-Sony PS3- 1 HDMI output, and 1 optical digital out
-Dish Network HD satellite reciever- 1 HDMI output, and 1 optical digital output
So I have all this ready and all the cables. I want to experience the surround sound in my living room and would appreciate any advice.

You need to start with a better receiver. The receiver is the brain of your home theater. Get one with at least two HDMI inputs and two Opt/Coax inputs. I have the Harmon Kardon 146 and it runs my Dish and PS3 with ease. Also has The Bridge if you own an Ipod. I bought it on Black Friday from BB for 200 bucks. Very nice entry level receiver IMO. well ive already got it so its too late. my friend told me to do it this way:
dish HDMI (Video) to HDTV
PS3 HDMI (Video) to HDTV
dush Optical (Audio)to HDX500
and then i would have to get a Toslink to caoxial converter (to plug an optical from the surround sound reciever to the caoxial whole on the ps3).
what do you guys think?

okay i set it up finally and everything works fine except for 2 things. All the speakers work except the center one. Since I have not hooked up the AM Loop Antenna, FM wire antenna, and the auto calibration mic, I have a feeling this is what its causing the center speaker not to work. Also, since I had to adjust the volume from the surround sound remote, i selected "TV speakers" on my sony hdtv options in order to adjut the volume through my dish network remote. Now, not only am i gettingn surround sound, but im also getting sound from my sony hdtv speakers too.......any problems with doing this or is it fine to do this?

Do not use tv speakers, when listening to surround. ALL sound comes from tv speakers, so it defeats the whole purpose of surround sound.
You may need to enable the center speaker, in the receiver's setup menus. Or you may need to adjust the speaker level, for the center speaker.

alright thanks. but im having trouble overriding my tv volume on my dish remote (i want to control my surround sound volume via my dish remote). ive tried every code but to no avail. should i get a universal remote? i was looking at the Sony RM-VL600 but it says it has limited codes in it to program it...which is why im guessing its only $20. i was also looking at the Philips Prestigo SRU8010

It's probably not going to operate the A/V receiver. Too many functions for it to remember. To get a good remote, you'll need to spend a little more. This remote will operate everything you have, except the ps3. I have one, and love it. Very easy to program (online) and operate.

Worth every penny. Sam's Club sells another model number of Harmony, that's a little cheaper. You'll thank yourself, if you get one....

Hey JVC. okay so I did a thorough search for a good remote and Im deciding between the Logitech Harmony 550,670,and 880. Im leaning towards the 880 and 670 becuase it has two important functions that i want in it: I think it will work better with my Dish Network remote and ofcourse has the volume punch through. I just want to know your thoughts and inputs on it, thanks.
On a side note, is it possible to control lighting too through one of the remotes?

Any of those remotes should work just fine. The 880 is very nice, if you can afford it. It was their top of the line, before the 890 and 1000 models. The only difference between the 880 and the 890, is the 890 is an RF remote. The 1000 is a touch screen remote, and costs about $400. The new remote will probably take the place of the Dish remote, instead of working with it.
If your lighting is remote controlled to start with, the Harmony should control them too. Just set it up for it, when programming it online. I've never used that feature personally, but heard they will work.
Good luck with the new remote. I'll bet you're going to love it.
If you're married, or have a girlfriend, they will like the Harmony too. Harmony is a very wife friendly remote.......... :o)

not sure what country you are in but maplins in the uk do a remote control lighting dimmer switch,about 20 pounds,it comes supplied with the remote but the codes can easily be copied to any learning remote control unit.In the set up mentioned you could get surround sound from the ps3 by using the optical output to the amps opt in,however if i were you i would be more concerned that the bravia 40s3000 is not a full hd display so it cannot display the ps3 in full high definition.

well yeah thats because there werent really any 1080p hdtv's in my budget so i settled for something less. besides, if i was going to buy a 1080 tv, I wouldve wanted one thats at least 46" as something less than that would be hard to see the difference between a tv thats 1080p or 720p and I dont need one that big in my living, 40" is more than enough for me.

i tend to agree with you on the 1080p,since purchasing mine ive noticed that a good 50% or more of ps3 games run at 720p and with cable and sat hd at 720 until at least 2012 the tv is ideal for the circumstances.Blu rays do look pretty jaw dropping at 1080p, but it comes at the expense of having to watch everything else artificially upscaled to fit the 1080 screen.Sorry for going off thread,i must remember you were actually asking about the sound set up.Thanks

hey guys i actaully have added an xbox 360 to my setup now. So I wanted to find out how I would integrate my 360 into my surround sound. The setup goes like this:
Dish HDMI to HDTV
PS3 HDMI to HDTV
Using a toslink to Coax converter,coaxial cable from the surround sound reciever to the coverter and then run a TOSLINK cable from the converter into the ps3
Dish Optical to HDX500
