I think they're a great idea; the ability to play all media, including single disk cdr media movies would certainly save me some drachma on the dvd coaster front...and then there's the unmentionable availability of xvid/divx movies from your local rental store at very reasonable rates...

A step forward? Or is it a jack of all and master of none. HAving spent a considerable amount of hard earned on a decent TV and home cinema setup it seems a bit silly to watch movies in less than dvd quality. That said, some of my divx and xvid cdr disks display exemplaray performance in terms of audio and visual quality. I found this player on this link. PS. I have no connection with them whoever they are, I just wondered if it'd be worth the gamble as £89 isn't a vast fortune Aren't Yamaha a pretty good make?

YamaHa makes good stuff, but I don't know the first thing about YamaDa, who makes the player you've looked at ;-)

Anyway, I like this concept and have been following its development for a while. It's really a matter of your needs, and there are in my opinion two basic questions that should be taken into account.

1) Do you have your DivXs on CD or do you store them on your computer?

If you have all the movies stored on your HDD, I would recommend a player like the KiSS 500 since you can plug it into your network and stream DivXs directly from your computer. Of course you can also listen to your computer's MP3s in your fancy home cinema setup. Which is very nice! :)

2) Will you be playing DVDs from this player?

In my experience, the DVD playback quality on the players with DivX support is generally lower than on players in the same price range without. So if you're going to play DVDs on this machine I would advise you to spend a few extra bucks and not go with the cheapest possible.

I've got 'em all on cdr- quite a lot actually and can't be bothered converting them to dvd.There is a marked drop in quality too from div3 or why to mpeg which I find quite perverse.

I have done some further searching and apparently Philips' new player is the one to go for but you can't as there aren't any available in sufficient quantities yet.

Most of the larger brands have been speaking of releasing DivX compatible players for quite a while. But it seems they are hesitant about something and won't produce any large quantities. I'm sure a lot is going to happen in this area, especially now when HTPC is becoming more widely spread, posing a potent threat to these companies.

If you are thinking about the Philips DVD 737, it doesn't support Xvid by default. The player can be updated with new DivX codecs but I'm not sure if this also applies to Xvid. Could be worth checking out before purchasing.

Both LiteOn and KISS Technologies produce standalone DVD players capable of playing DivX/XviD movies. So I've been looking for a stand-alone DivX/XViD player for some time now, and they seem pretty scarce in the US. From Praetor's post the Liteon seems to be pretty popular and get decent reviews...

But what about this one I found today. Appears to be a little beefier (so is the price though) and I've never heard of the supplier... but then again Liteon's pretty rare too. What do you guys think of this one?

I have the Philips 737 with newest firmware, and it plays xvid just perfect, even with dolby, if encoded.
also plays mpg and mpeg even if not burned as s/vcd, and u can even make it region free just using ur remote, if in doubt about dvd players or how to make em region free go to www.dvdrhelp.com and click dvd players or dvd hacks
