Saved DVD on Hard Drive Playback

Please excuse my ignorance in advance...I am an old guy (non-techie) who embarked on the simple task of trying to digitize and save some old family VCR recordings for posterity.
I converted the old VCRs to DVD+R format. Thank I used Shrink to save them to my external hard drive. However, when I then open the saved video files, they open through Windows Movie Maker. Thereafter, I can't play the video. I can't figure out how to get the saved video on the hard drive to play on the computer. I have tried opening the folder with Windows Media Player, but I get a message it won't work because it doesn't accept the file code.
In essence, my question is after you've saved a video through Shrink, and simply want to view one saved on your hard drive through the computer, how can you get it to play?

I actually have Power DVD installed on my computer...it works well with playing the DVD discs.
My problem is simply playing movies back stored on the hard drive (rather than from the DVDs themselves). Is there a way to open up these files stored on the hard drive using Power DVD?

Hi,
Your movie is not saved as a DVD +R format. That would be a type of DVD media. As long as it's parked on your hard drive it will be either a set of DVD-Video files or a .iso file. You probably saved it as a set of DVD-Video files.
Click the movie folder and see if you can find a VIDEO_TS folder full of .ifo, .bup and .vob file types.
I'm not surprised your WMP won't play it. Unless you have a DVD decoder installed it won't. When I build a PC I usually install a free one that will play DVDs and DVD movies from the hard drive.

Easy, on the powerdvd control panel lr by the center control circle, states source, click it and choose dvd files on hard drive. Find the file you want to play, click it and watch.

Thanks folks, but I still am having no luck, as follows:
Power DVD-I must have an abbreviated or older version thatcame with my computer --it only plays DVDS when inserted--no other options such as central control circle, source choice, etc.
VLC--Tried it--wouldn't open saved program
Hippo.com Player--wouldn't open (actually for some reason, wouldn't locate the file on the external drive, although it is clearly there as when I check it under MY COMPUTER.
I really only wanted to save these old home videos on the computer external hard drive as a secondary source of backup in case the DVRs were destroyed. Many contain lost loved ones and the images are priceless to me---just thought it would be nice if occasionally I could play them on the computer from the hard drive instantaneously.
One other question....if I actually do destroy the original DVD and wanted to create another DVD from the stored file on the hard drive, how do I do It?
Thanks again in advance for any suggestions.

Assuming the files are in DVD format as you say, all you need to do is open your burner program, select the files on the hard drive as your source and have your optical drive (burner) as the target. Just remember the source has to fit the target. The source can't be larger. Burning will also depend on how you stored the files, whether an Image file (ISO) or Files folder (VIDEO_TS).
One question you didn't answer was the format the video files are in. As pointed out, Shrink could have saved the files to the hard drive in a Video_TS folder or as an ISO image file. If it's an image file, that would account for your not being able to open them with a player. You should be able to use the viewer in Shrink to view the files whichever format you saved to. Open Files and Open Disc you can see. Behind Files at the top is the option to open disc images. Select the files according to Image (ISO) or Files (VIDEO_TS). The viewer is at the bottom left of the Shrink window. Highlight the file(s) you want played by clicking on them then click play on the viewer control (the universal icons). Double click the veiwer and it expands to full screen. Double click again and the screen returns to small size. If Shrink processed the files, Shrink should play them.

open ur movie folder
open ur video_ts folder
right click on the vob file
and it will ask u open with...
click it and choose the dvd player u like ...powerdvd or vlc
u shouls see all the icons that are playable changed to the icon of the player and it should play the files

At the risk of wearing out my welcome with some elementary stupid questions, can someone help me with with following:
1. I am basically using Shrink to backup DVD disc to hard drive for security in case some day the DVD's are destroyed and I need to produce copies for posterity. Do I need to get a special burner program for this (or will Shrink itself do the job), and if so, what do you recommend?
2. When I try to store multiple DVDs using Shrink to the hard drive, they seem to be stored in assigned multiple overlapping weird code names---is there a simple way I can store and assign a name to them (such as "25th Reunion") so I can spot them when I want to retrieve from the hard drive (perhaps I need to somehow assign a special file name to DVD at the time I create the DVD from the VCR)?
3. When utilizing Shrink to store DVD on the hard drive, at the time I give the command to Backup DVD, an optional box appears to "CREATE VIDEO_TS AND AUDIO_TS" subfolders---should I do this? what does this mean?

You've yet to tell us if you've stored the video in files or as an image. ImgBurn is free and burns the ISO format. In Build mode it converts Files to ISO and burns. Nero burns Files or ISO. Using Nero Express to burn is a painless process. There's other burning programs available. For the price, you can't beat ImgBurn.
You can create a folder for Shrink to save to and rename the volume in the Backup window.
You want the Video_TS folder. Normally the Audio_TS is empty, but it comes with the package. Both video and audio are stored in the Video_TS folder.
The Help section in Shrink still works. Give it a click and check out the Guides under Help Topics. The ones from DVDShrink.info are interactive and a quick way to get started with Shrink. The Doom9 guide covers version 3.2, so you'll want to give that a look. It should deal with some of the changes that are specific to version 3.2.

Go ahead and tick the "CREATE VIDEO_TS AND AUDIO_TS"box. This is suppose to help enhance compatibility with old DVD players. Now, under Select Backup Target, click on pull-down menu and select your burning application i.e. Nero, ImgBurn et al. From there on, this application wiill default as your primary burning application; it'll automatically be summoned by Shrink immediately after encoding and burn the files for you.

You're welcome and I'm glad I was able to help.
If you want ImgBurn as a supported burner for Shrink instead of DVD Decrypter (so ImgBurn will autoburn from Shrink), you can pick up the exe file needed for the modification at http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Guides/Software2.html along with instructions.

From what you said about not being able to find the files with Dvd Shrink, I am going to guess that they were ISOs. If you want to open an ISO file in Dvd Shrink, use Ctrl/i.

I commend you all in your patient help with sobol1 problem. Now, since i've been thinking and am sort of in the same boat and would rather not start another thread and waste space.....i use anydvd and clonedvd2. I plan on storing all my dvd movies onto an external hdd. What can i do to save them as small as possible and then simply go to my "catalog" and click on the movie and have it play instantly?
I'd really love to set it up that i could go into one of those fancy movie database programs that store all the movie info including dvd covers and say"yep, that's the movie i want to watch". *CLICK* it plays just like that. Is this at all possible?!

The thread wasn't going anywhere anyway and the question is along the same lines. If you're wanting to keep your movies in DVD format, you can bump the file size down a bit more using the manual settings in DVD Shrink. Quality suffers the more a movie is compressed. DivX is a more space efficient format, if you can play it the way you have your system set up.

so i should use DVDShrink instead of CloneDVD?
If i convert to DivX; how much more space savings are we talking? I assume it's not like i can get 2 movies in the space of one... Also, I assume that if my cousin came over to watch a movie and said, "i want a copy", i'd have to convert it back to a dvd format so he could watch it at home, correct?
As for working with my "setup", i dont really have one yet. I'm simply trying to figure out how i can do what i'd like to.
I don't know if you've seen those touchscreen jukeboxes at the bar, but i'd like to set it up something like that: search the listings of movies i have and then just *click* and the movie plays.

DivX is more compact than DVD. I've not really compared the sizes, but 2 or more videos in the space of a DVD video should be possible. DivX can be compressed similar to DVD and it starts out being more compact, as mentioned. As for CloneDVD and DVD Shrink, I just mentioned Shrink because I know there's an adjustable Maximum size.

OK, well, i guess i'll have to look into DivX if that's as small as i can go. Just have to bite the bullet a little since i'll have to convert to dvd to make a copy for my dvd player.

I have an inexpensive DVD player, a Philips, that plays multiple formats, including DivX. Many of the newer players play VCD, DivX, MP3, DVD amd other formats.
